Okay, simple question - I had to turn in my mouse ears today (*groan*), do I need to have each parent (mom and dad) fill out an Affidavit of Support, or do they just fill one out together?

Sorry if this sounds stupid ... I checked VJ first to see if this was addressed, couldn't find a sufficient answer, and as you can understand I'm a little out of sorts today.

Ouch! That really stinks, I'm sorry....

I can't give you anything other than moral support, as I have no idea about marrieds filling out cosponsors....

Seems like lately if you aren't laid off you're scared of being laid off. No fun!

I wonder if you'd still be able to be the sole sponsor based on the idea that you have reliably held a job and made enough money (last 3 years income tax records?)? Obviously probably not able to get a new job fast enough for the interview though.

Hey Hon, as long as one parent makes over the poverty limit for the amount of dependants (I'm not sure if in this case it would be based on 4 people? you him and your parents?) you should be ok. I would just look into what the limit is for 4 ppl and then see which one makes over that and get them to fill out the affidavit. I'm sorry to hear about your job loss. Just so you know:

You only need one of your parents to be the co-sponsor. If they file their taxes together, that is fine; get a copy of their most recent tax return (some embassies need the last 3 years I guess; Japan only asks for the most recent, so that is the only one I know). You will also want to ask your parent who is co-sponsoring to get a letter from their employer (on official company letterhead) stating their current salary, position title, and start date at the company. You will also want 3+ of that parent's most recent paystubs. Get all the same for yourself (even if it isn't sufficient; you still need to fill out an affidavit of support for yourself as well as your co-sponsor) except the things you obviously can't get if you aren't employed. As long as your parent makes like 20k+ (roughly enough to support that parent, your other parent, and your spouse; I was assuming since you had a job up until now you might no longer be their dependant; but if you are, as long as that parent makes like 23k+) you should be good to go

Just make sure you get all the documents to back everything up and it seems like it will go smoothly!

Aww, thanks everyone!

I have a job interview on Tuesday, so there's something good! Oh, btw - my official "final" day of employment at Disney is 6/1 - I will continue to receive a paycheck every week until then. My wonderful father is going to be sponsoring us, so I guess (hope) we'll be okay. Now that I think about it, if John is asked about my employment at his interview (when the time comes), what should he say? Any ideas? I don't want to make one misstep ... if the K-1 doesn't happen for us, I guess we'll be moving to Endor (I don't want to add to England's overpopulation).

i hope everything works well in the end....sorry for being laid off but on the lighter side, u seem to have a lot going on good for you coz now u have interview coming so all is not lost. Keep that spirit high, it certainly makes one feel better amidst crisis.

Thank you - I can always count on all of you to make a fellow VJ'er feel better. It's funny, I haven't cried ... I really, really loved my job. I did see this coming for a while, though. Omigod, Thursday was a total bloodbath straight out of 300. People being escorted out of the building left and right. I feel worse for those who have families to feed, whereas it's just me at home with a half-pint of Ben & Jerry's.

As long as I can get my Honey here, I'm straight. I have faith that I will find work soon, freelance if not full-time. I have an interview on Tuesday, I will continue to get paid until June, and after that, I can draw unemployment while I look for work. So bills will be paid for a while. I'm confident that the job situation will get better. I just don't want my John to be denied - that's when the tears will REALLY start!

Plus, 2 months to find a new job before that one runs out...

Having a cosponsor will help you sleep at night though. Looks like things will work out.

What Heather said. If he is asked its not a problem to tell the truth, because you do have your dad lined up. He can say you were unfortunately laid off but have some prospective jobs you are interviewing for (let him know for where and what so if he is asked he can tell them) but that your dad has generously agreed to support you both until one of you can work. It shouldnt be an issue as you have a co-sponsor. *hugs* I hope your interview goes well! Keep us informed!

It was the pitiful whining for the employment letter, wasn't it? Sorry, a little recession humor.

A co-sponsor needs to be only ONE person. Your father or mother should fill out the I-134 as a single individual. The other person will be counted in the "family size" along with your fiance and any other children dependent on them

I just hit a snag on the I-134 ... where it says "I am employed or engaged in the business of ..." with lines to insert place of employment, address, etc. - I'm wondering what I should put now. My employment officially ends on June 1st. Do I still put down my (now former) place of work, write "unemployed", attach a separate letter explaining the layoff, etc.? Umm.

You still go into work? You still have a paycheck? You still get benefits? I think you're still employed...

There are people who do contract work who also have specified end dates to their current job. I'm not sure that they consider themselves unemployed.

I know you're stressing out about all this, I probably would be too! I think your cosponsor is a great safety net. If you don't like being underhanded (I wouldn't either) then have John explain that you've been notified that you'll be laid off in June (hopefully new job, and offer letter can be presented!), and that you also have your cosponsor stuff in case the interviewer wants that also.
