How long after arrival in the US before the green card is sent?

About a month after your POE

Does the owner of the green card have to be physically present when it is delivered?

No, I believe it is sent through regular mail

Can the immigrant travel freely in the US while waiting for the green card?

Yes, the stamp in your passport will act as a temporary green card

It's getting exciting isn't it?

receiving the green card feels like finally sealing the deal, but then you are faced with the prospect of removing conditions / applying for citizenship...the damn list goes on and on...does it ever stop? :) It's like being married to the USCIS for the rest of your life if you married a non-US spouse!

Woohoo, yey! I want to see the American landscape and take pics! LOTS of it! :P

And yeah, it does seem like being tied to the paperwork forever. But that's the advantage of the I-130. There's less to do once one arrives in the States!

How do you obtain your green card? Is it by filing the I485 after your POE after your CR1 visa has been approved?

my wife entered on a CR1 and shortly thereafter her green card arrived without filing any additional forms...took about a month to arrive in the mail box...good luck...on a second note, we selected on the DS-230 that the SS card be issued, but after waiting 6 weeks after her point of entry, we ended up having to go apply for her SS card....

Great! Thanks so much! BTW, did you have to file any other paperwork after the CR1 visa was approved like an adjustment of status? I'm only aware of having to file the form 2 years later to remove the conditional status on the visa so that your spouse is truly a permanent resident. That's it, right?

That is correct. No additional filing is required. Green card will arrive in mail about a month after POE and for SSN, its better to visit the local office and apply. You will need to remove conditions by applying 90 days before 2 years of POE (not your marriage anniversary).

I got my CR-1 green card after 2 weeks of POE and applied for SSN Card after a week of waiting (even if I selected in DS-230 for number to be issued).

If you're in a CR-1 category like me, you have to remove the condition in residency 90 days before the expiration date indicated in the green card (file it 88 days before to be in the safe side). Another long months of agony in waiting for the USCIS approval

Start gathering joint documents and evidences of bonafide marriage when your spouse got here so you will not find yourself procastinating when its time to file the I-751.

Never ever say never
