Sooo glad all you guys are still around, i've taken some time out for the wedding, and am now back with a vengence, ready to face the brain ache that is AOS! We're almost ready to file the paperwork so fingers crossed :)

Did anyone have probs with their SSN?

I applied on the 3rd June (in New Jersey), still nothing. Called them today and they advised to pop into the local office (if only a visit to Social security was a mere 'pop in')

Good luck to everyone who's about to embark on their wedding/AOS etc.....i wish you all a smooth and happy journey :)

Do you have to call Dr. Arnold first?

Yes, you do. You call the number, the receptionist calls you back, and takes you through the whole process (what to send, what you sign, what you don't sign, the whole shabang).

Hey Selina!

:D Congrats on getting married. Now the fun begins!

The only issues I had with my SSN were concerning me changing my name, because I had actually applied for an SSN when I got here. Alaska law requires an SSN, and I ordered one before we decided to get married in San Antonio so Knight's brother could see us, too (we had a little wedding, so we could have the big ceremony later). It should be a breeze for you, if you didn't do what I did -- just explain what purpose you need it for and everything should be good. Show a copy of the marriage certificate and any ID you can produce (my passport worked for that). I don't know if it's the same where you're at, but an SSN is required for a state ID and a driver's license where I'm at. :D Because of that, I do have a very shiny state ID and hopefully will go for my driver's test soon. I was looking at the manual, and got the giggles (oops, it's vrry vrry serious business).

Are the queues really that bad at your local office? I'd suggest going in the mornings, right after they open...Anchorage was pretty empty when I went, and they got through numbers fast. Also, to fill up time, take a book and also fill out the paperwork you need beforehand, which should be provided by the entrance to the SSN waiting room when you walk in.

Hope that's helpful. If it's not, send me some custard and I'll dump it over my head.

Magpie.

Hehe! thanks Magpie :) No custard needed lol I'm going down there first thing thursday morning so hopefully will find out whats going on. I had no problems applying, just havent received a number/card yet, and the guy i spoke to yesterday couldn't find anything out either, guess i'll have to wait and see :)

On an AOS note, anyone applying for advance parole (just in case it's needed) what did you guys put in the dates that you want to travel? would an 'unkown' be good enough! I'm not planning on going anywhere, but after reading this thread, thought i'd better apply just in case.

Nich, I don't think I can thank you enough (as always!) -- I was convinced my brain was going to give up, hop out of my ear, and go on vacation somewhere. There's going to be a bit of confusion which I hope I clarified anyhow because Knight shares the same name and middle initial as his dad, but I'm sure the USCIS get it all the time. I've made it painfully clear that the guy named in the tax returns shared with Diane, and in her form, is not the same guy I'm married to. We're pretty much good to go now -- all that remains is to mail it off with a cheque.

Huuugs! Also, thankums everyone else =D we're almost to stage one of the AOS horror ride. Eeeee!

MonkeyJuice :D glad to have you with us! Yay!

call the local office you applied at, and find out, then ask if theres any way u can get the number, they wont give it over the phone but you can go in and get a letter or something.. that way if u need it for anything you have the number, coz no one really asks for the card i dont think.

its a pain in the butt because I am trying to volunteer as a mentor and tutor for this centre that deals with refugee children.. and also trying to sort the drivers licence out URGHH

hmmmm Does anyone know whether there is a trend as to how late in the process can someone expect to see their cases transferred if they are gonna be? i am looking at my cases and they were touched after the biometrics which i think seems like a usual thing but i was wondering if its too late for me to expect the possibility of a transfer to csc? if you don't get transferred do they still notify you when they send it to the local office? or do they not bother in that circumstance?

Also who adjudicates the ap and ead again? does it have to get sent to the right office before they start that?

Whoops. We wanted to get it sent out ASAP and when we tried to call, it said "answerer off" or something. So we assumed we could just send what we had along with a cover letter explaining the situation. We sent my Knightsbridge record, my HPV record, a $30 check and 2 copies of the form (with part 1 filled in and signed). Hopefully they'll call if there's a problem.

About AP, I assume the seperate sheet (that Nich provided as example) stating that you don't have any specific travel dates but would like to use the permit to re-enter after a short trip in the event of an emergency would suffice. I plan on using "unknown" in that section, along with the supplement.

As Magpie said, going to the office to enquire about the whereabouts of your card sounds good.

Thanks guys, i think my head would fall off if it wasn't for everyone on here :)

I'll leave the dates as 'unkown' sign date and triple cross check it all, then should be good to go :)

Gonna be camping outside SS on thursday morning when they open, i can't even find the phone number for the local office, so i'm going in person :)

I just put unknown and said I while I had no plans to travel I was applying for it in case of an emergency, they gave it to me no questions asked.

You can look at the UK AOS Timeline and see how long it took various people. Ours was transferred before biometrics. I've see people not transferred for 4 months, so AOS has some random timelines that don't seem to be an orderly progression. Don't know if they notify you of transfer to a local office, but I think they do by the CRIS email and an actual letter in the mail. But sometimes they don't do what they're supposed to do. We never got an email or a welcome letter or approval notice...just the green card suprise in the mail. So it's hard to say exactly what will happen.

:P I think there's something wrong with me. I've been using red, white and blue paperclips for everything, and my coversheets for the various documents have red, white and blue strips below the title...

As for Social Security, it's best to go in. You shouldn't really have any trouble if you go in there -- but you do need to give them a reason for it. Because an SSN is required to get married in Alaska, it might be the reason they let me have one so easily. Pester them -- it really depends on where you are and the volume of people who are there. My new one came pretty quickly after I went into the office to explain about the fact that I'm now married and need a new one with my name on it. You need one for a driver's license too up here, and they'll check your name on the SSN

In terms of the parole document, I just used the justification letter which I think you'll be able to find under example forms. Miss G, you can mention your dad in the letter if you like :( I'm sorry that he's not doing so good at the moment, and I hope he recovers.
