UK AOS 2009 Thread

Whoo! thank goodness for this thread! Well we've been in the US just over 2 weeks now, i've applied for my my SSN, so am hoping that'll be here in the next few weeks! Only problem is, my son can't be issued one without and EAD (Employment Authorization Document) and from what we can gather we have to go back to Immigration and apply with form I-765, which is going to cost an extra 300 and something dollars! He's only 13 and is hardly likely to be working any time soon, does anyone else have any idea's as to whether this is the correct procedure or not?

Then its on to AOS...arrgh! It's great to see a lot of familiar faces here, i fear there's more brain ache to come..lol

Hi there. Glad you found us. We don't have a K2 child so maybe somebody will have better advice. You know you can apply for EAD free with AOS? It normally comes faster than the AOS approval. Looking at our little UK AOS timeline the average time is about 54 days for those participating. A SSN can be issued with that. Or he can wait for his green card, which may be 4-6 months. I know schools ask for a SSN but if he can't get one, then they will have to make a concession while he's waiting I would think.

Anybody else with a more experienced suggestion??

Hi everyone, I arrived in the US on the 25th May POE Newark no probs at all!! My wedding isn't until July so not at AOS stage just yet, my question is about SSN, will it come automatically or do I have to apply? Also for the EAD and AP do I have to wait until AOS to apply for these? I'm just as confused now I'm here as I was at the start!!

You can apply for your SSN at your local social security office. Best to wait 10 days or so after POE so that you show up on their system. You apply for EAD and AP with your AoS.

I have a K2 son with me. He didn't need a SSN card. We did go to apply for him but they told us that until he starts to work he won't be issued with one. It's not needed so you really don't have to worry about it!

....people are getting approved real fast and getting their ead and ap cards just as fast as well. im hoping that we have that kind of luck when it comes to the EAD.

we have our bio apt for the 19th...hopefully its a quick approval and card production

If you're wanting to speed things up why not roll-up for your biometrics appt early? I went for mine almost a week before i was scheduled.

Once you have your appointment letter most places will allow walk-ins.

Really???? of course our apt notice doesnt say anything about walk-ins.....

I had my biometrics today. It's actually really cool watching that FBI machine match your prints, one by one, with the records they have from your POE. It flashes up "pass" in green every time a print matches. Seriously, it's like watching an episode of CSI!

Oh, and when the lady said to me, "you'll have your work card within 30 to 90 days" she meant much, much nearer to 30 days than 90, right? Because that's just a standard reply, right?

from what i have read its closer to 30 days. i believe after the biometrics you get a letter saying to allow at least 30 days for the card.... iv seen people getting it sooner and i see some people waiting a lot longer then 30 days. so i agree that its a standard reply. your prints arent going to get you express access to getting a card as much as we would all like

I was lazy and just went on my appointment date for the biometrics, I'm not sure looking at the people in the march filers group whether or not going earlier helps speed up the process and some people have been turned away, not all offices will accept walk ins.

I am very happy to be able to report that my green card arrived in the post today :dance:
