I don't mind telling people to wash their hands after they're done in the bathroom in our house. I'm appalled at how many are not washing their hands after using the bathroom. Hubby gets to clean up if his friend messes the bathroom (or he can ask the friend to clean up - up to him) I won't do it.

OMG that sounds like me!!!

But I am more straight forward even with my friends and I will tell them directly because this is my home!

I am very respectful when visiting someone's home and using their bathroom and feel they should be the same.

A less confrontational method might be to put a little sign over the toilet. (or whatever area it is needed.)

I have seen these before and they actually reminded me to "lift the lid".

Put up little notes telling people to walk on the newspaper you laid down on the bathroom floor, and for people to wash their hands after using the towel.

Sometimes you just have to accept the fact that other people are not as ________ as you (fill in the blank). You have to expect that sort of behavior from people (your guests); that way you won't get upset over it. Realize that you are a clean person with decent manners and some of your guests are messy people with piss poor manners.... For a while I was getting pissed off at all the stupid things that my younger siblings occasionally do and say. I figured out that I was getting really mad at some of their actions 2-3 times per week and had to discover a way to deal with this anger. So my trick or cure to this issue was to fully understand that their intelligence is much lower than mine, their organizational skills are severely lacking, and they are lazy bums. Now virtually anything that they do or say will not ever come as a shock. I expect their disgusting behaviors and therefore do not get the slightest bit upset over them.

This is something people shouldn't have to be told to do. Didn't their parents raise them right? But you have to just tell them how you feel.

My grandmother had up a little painting as a reminder with one of those old-fashioned Gingham Girls and some slogan on it. We noticed it, and it was a good reminder that didn't make us feel like it was directed at us. Maybe there's a more modern way to accomplish something similar without slapping up Post-its. I'd feel weird reminding guests to clean up after themselves, but I also wouldn't want to clean up after them.
