Malvinas Day (Spanish: Día de Malvinas), officially Day of the War Veteran and the Fallen in the Malvinas War (Día del Veterano de Guerra y de los Caídos en la Guerra de las Malvinas) is a public holiday in Argentina, celebrated each year on April 2. The islands are usually known in the English-speaking world by their British name, the Falklands.

The holiday is a tribute to Argentina's fallen soldiers in the Falklands War (Guerra de las Malvinas), which began with the Argentine occupation of the islands on April 2, 1982.

give the Falklands back to Argentina..

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

 Oh dear.

I just can't be sympathetic to this - given that British descendents have been living there for generations. At the least - given that the Argentinians are not resident on the islands they have no reasonable claim to them outside of flag-waving nationalism.

The islanders should determine their own destiny - in which respect they already have: British Sovereignty.

The only fair thing to do really would be to have a devolved sovereignty, rather like the island of Jersey. But again - this is surely dependent on whether the islanders would accept that, though given that the Argentinian military invaded the islands and rounded up the local populace, I can't imagine they'd be sympathetic to something like that.

That said - I have no idea how nationalistic the Falklanders are about that.

Its not really colonialism in the traditional sense Almaty - in that we're not talking about the mass displacement of native populations.

What this is about is a legal claim to sovereignty that goes back several hundred years to a period of time when the islands changed hands a number of times in a very short period.

The reality is that the people living there have more claim to the land than either of the countries who claim them as part of their national territory. It just so happens that the people who live there choose to remain British citizens.

No problem with anyone honoring the dead. But this....

"give the Falklands back to Argentina.." ha, ha, ha, you're a day late - April 1 was yesterday :rofl:

But if you were being serious then that should happen right after the Argentina is given back to the native indians, Kazakhstan is given back to Russia? And a whole lot of other changes, right?

How is it "interesting"?

I'm not arguing this from the basis of a nationalist standpoint - I could really care less who owns those islands from that point of view (though doubtless there are strategic advantages for the UK to retain the territory). What I do care about are the people who actually live there, and who have lived there for generations - especially if the expected implication of "returning" the islands to Argentina is that those people are displaced and have their land and property taken away.

Since none of the events regarding the sovereignty issue took place within living memory (aside from the war), the only valid and surely "moral" claim to ownership of that territory rests in the hands of the people who live there.

As I said - the fairest thing to do would be to devolve sovereignty, and grant the Falklands the same status that Jersey enjoys. But I believe the residents did have a referendum about their future some years back and decided to remain under British rule.

interesting in a sense that you make an excellent point and also, just a shooter's does too...

but britian does not or at least maybe..being diplomatic

FALKLANDS war hero Simon Weston has branded Gordon Brown’s plans to discuss the sovereignty of the islands with Argentina “crass and insensitive”.

Downing Street yesterday confirmed that Mr Brown will meet Argentine President Cristina Kirchner on Friday.

And while No 10 officials insist Mr Brown is not about to surrender the Falklands, anger has been growing among veterans about his decision – revealed by the Daily Express – to listen to claims on the island.

I believe the UK govts position has to do with claims to territory in the Antarctic.

I'm not terribly surprised - as these things are often driven by self-interest rather than genuine motivations to resolve the sovereignty dispute.

That said - I do believe that the people living on that land have the right to determine their own destiny, and that it shouldn't be imposed on them by foreign governments.

after doing some quick research, i agree..the folks living there have been under british policies and protection since the mid 1800s/..so your point is correct..but if they wanted to be part of argentina or a free island and were prohibted then, the issue would be different.. see soviet union etc.

good information...thanks

Certainly - though I doubt the UK would go to war to enforce its sovereignty if the population chose to be Argentinian Citizens.

What would likely happen is that some sort of lease would be negotiated - which allows, for example, The US to operate a military base in Cuba.
