It is interesting that what notaries do here is different than in Canada. Notary Publics in Canada have a different legal responsibility than just to verify that the signer is who they say they are and that the copies are true copies. The equivalent in Canada is a Commissioner of Oaths - I was a Commissioner of Oaths for 7 years and did a lot of witnessing of signatures and certifying documents as true copies. Unfortunately, the same office doesn't exist by that title in the US so US authorities don't recognize that what Commissioners of Oaths do in Canada is the same thing that Notaries do in the US. Anyone in the US who wants to can become a Notary by submitting the necessary fee and application to the appropriate Government official. In Canada you have to provide a reason why you need to be a Commissioner of Oaths and you are investigated before the Commission is granted by the Lt. Governor of the Province.

In the US, if your bank won't notarize your documents (they don't notarize signatures on wills, for example) most UPS stores have a Notary Public on staff who will notarize documents and witness signatures for $3 a document or signature.

So, I am being paranoid.

I confirmed with Montreal a few days ago that the NEW I-134 FORMS DO NOT NEED NOTARIZATION.

However, I am worried because on my checklist, it listed "Notarized copy of I-134" and I had checked the box that YES SIREE I have it! (When I did not ;) My fiance and I downloaded the new form and just used that.

BUT I was sent the old form in P3 and am worried that maybe they sent me the old form because they WANTED it notarized (IE, maybe I am a special case).

Ugh.......is it April 18th yet? ;)

ANyway, so I am debating just saying to hell with it and getting the OLD form notarized and having my fiance FedEX it to me.

How much does it cost and does it tpyically take weeks to get it done. It would be done in VA.

Thanks

(1) the new I-134 no longer needs to be notorized , but the old ones do ( but they are expired look at the top of the form you will see the expiration ), even if you use it in usembassy they will not except it ). Yeah your a special case , of what im not sure  stupid to be paranoid

Seriously, is that called for? Kind of a jerky thing to say isn't it?? This is a forum where people come to ask questions regarding a procedure that is very precise.

Not being paranoid and trusting that, "oh everything is fine" cost me a 3 month wait because NVC sent to wrong Consulate. Had I been "paranoid" and checked up on it, it could have been avoided.

If you can't be respectful, just don't say anything. You're comment is neither necessary nor polite.

yep, another rude poster(Aaron M). keep that to the "off topic" forum!!

That's why we are here to answer questions!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Hi Everyone,

I don't know anything about I-134 forms and notarizing those, but I can tell you that notaries in the USA are as follows, based on my prior experiences:

-FREE at our local bank, which we have an account with, for some non-immigration matter

-FREE (or was it $5 USD, I can't remember exactly) for a notary public in NYS for the I-864 (back about 3 years ago when those forms needed to be notarized, but no need to notarize them now since they changed the rules on that)

-$5 USD for a notary public in PA for an I-751 affidavit (lol..we had an interesting time driving around PA searching for them, and they seemed really confused as to what they had to notarize for us)

And for a "guarantor" and "2 additional references" for a Canadian passport:

-$3.00 USD in postage (for sending/re-sending the forms and photos back and forth) and $30.00 USD in long-distance telephone bills (for a lot of 'begging and bargaining' to them to agree to such). Oh well...at least I have my new Canadian passport now...

Hope this helps. Good luck on the rest of your immigration journey too.

When we got our packet 3 in contained the checklist that also had "notorized" I-134 and the form they sent us was one that had to be notorized. So, Peter had it notorized at the courthouse for free. I know the new forms don't need to be, but we figured if that's what they sent us... then we better get it done. I emailed the consulate as well and asked, they replied that if that's the form we got, then that's the one to fill out.

That is not true .. This date does not mean anything unless they explicitly tell you to use a NEW form instead. When they sent us our packet 3, the DS-230 form was already expired according to the date at the top of the form. This is the form they sent us and this is the form I sent back. Seems like they accepted it since they gave us our interview date. Unless they tell you otherwise, you are perfectly in your right to use the forms they send you.

Few are those who see with their own eyes and feel with their own hearts.
