Poo poo about the 'non hand written' birth certificate - they are nifty keeno! Unless Sask is in the dark ages, you should be able to get a computer generated one - however you should not have to!!

As for the 15 days - that is the 'standard' answer whenever anything is sent to be reviewed by a supervisor at NVC, just so you know it doesn't normally take that long.

If they in fact read their own guidelines they would see that the certified copy of the actual original is completely acceptable!!

Birth, Marriage, and Death Certificates

Births, marrriages, and deaths are registered in the Canadian provinces or territory in which they took place. Though each province or territory issues its own certificates for these events, there are a few basic formats for them across Canada:

The "small" or "short form" certificate is a computer-printed, limited extract of information from provincial records. It is a wallet-sized card, 9.5 x 6.4 cm or 2.5 x 3.75in (Speciman from British Columbia). Short-form or small certificates are not acceptable for visa purposes because they do not contain enough identification information, such as parents' names.

The "large" or "full-size" certificate is a computer-printed extract of information from provincial records. It is printed on currency-style paper stock, 21.6 x 17.8 cm or 7 x 8.25 in., with an intaglio border (Speciman from British Columbia).

A "certified copy of a record" is an exact or near-exact copy of the actual paper record in the provincial archives. It is printed on safety paper, usually 21.5 x 28 cm or 8.5 x 14in., and bears the province or territory's raised seal. This type of certificate, being a complete record rather than an extract, contains the most information about the event.

A "commemorative" certificate is a decorative document intended for display (Speciman from Manitoba). Commemorative certificates are not considered legal documents in Canada and are not acceptable for visa purposes.

Saskatchewan does do computer generated birth certificates, but they are not the "long" form, they are called the "short" form. By the way, they no longer do wallet size ones if anyone is interested. I will fax the necessary forms in on Monday, and should have the computer generated b/c within 10 days. Perhaps when the supervisor checks things out they will find the "long" one sufficient, but I will not wait on their decision.

I was so mad when I got my long form birth certificate! Turns out I already had it (I just didn't know that's what it was...) and I paid $35 for the darn thing. Its weird because I tried to use that to get an SIN number about 5 years back and they told me it wasn't acceptable and that I needed to get the wallet sized one... Now I'm being told the wallet sized one isn't acceptable and they need the long version...

Mine is computer generated aside from a couple things... like where it says hospital of birth its hand written and my doctors name is hand written as well... Its a certified copy or whatever from the Ontario archives so It better be fine!

Good luck with everything Carslo! That would be terribly frustrating... Unfortunately for you, you probably ended up with the 1 stickler process applications that day.

My long-form birth certificate (from Ontario) is hand-written also. I ordered it a few months ago, paid the $35 fee, got the runaround from Purolator for a few days (the driver left it in his truck for 2 days and they had to track it down). I opened the envelope and thought to myself "what on earth is my Mom's handwriting doing on an official document? Oh well."

Anyway, sorry you're having trouble with all of this stuff Janet. Good luck with everything!

In Ontario, I was a Division Registrar who handled the registrations for birth, most of them are hand written. The form is given to the mother after the birth of a child. She is required to complete it and forward it to the local municipal office who registers the birth and forwards this same document to the Office of the Registrar General in Thunder Bay. So for anyone in Ontario, when you request the long form, it will be hand-written with parents information, place of birth, and doctor's information. It will be on 8-1/2 x 14 with the seal for Ontario.

Heheh I won't disagree with that. My Mom has very pretty handwriting. And more importantly, it is legible. :)

Wow, they still do it that way? That's actually kinda neat. And it makes me feel um... not old, so that's even better.

Thanks for the words of encouragement! I am pretty much resigned to not being able to finish the NVC and interview process by the end of June to co-incide with the end of the school year. So I applied for a summer school position, asking for both sessions. Perhaps by doing that, I will get everything done and be on the road to California.

I will keep you posted,

Janet
