Okay... so now I've got a question. I thought I understood this, but now I don't think I do.

Applying for SSN... for a K1 - can that happen before the wedding or only after?

Sorry Huggles for hijacking what you hijacked from Suzuki.

Before the wedding and then you can go back and change the name if needed. That is what we are doing. We applied for our marriage license today without a SSN.

Perfect! He's moving to the US, so there won't be any name changes. Thanks!

Perfect especially for a man or a woman not changing their name! I was married within 2 weeks after we moved so I waited anyway a week or 2 more, and came with my marriage certificate and all was well.

  • 2 weeks later...

UPDATE:

I went back to the SSN office almost a full month later, and they STILL didn't have me on the system!! Grrr... The lady said "they're probably busy up there." She meant the POE... which I described in another post. I told the lady, "Yeah, that port of entry was a complete mess... I am not surprised that they haven't gotten around to putting me in the system. I wouldn't be surprised if they lost my info." She did not reply or smile... so I stopped talking! lol

She said that it probably wouldn't take too long to manually verify the info.. but that it could take up to 12 weeks. So I have my fingers crossed and am hoping that it won't take that long to get my SSN.

Anyone else have any experience with not being in the system when applying for their SSN? How long did it take you to get it after manual verification?

I wasn't in the system when I went to apply, but she took my application anyway. She told me it would be 4-6 weeks for things to be checked out...I got my card in teh mail 3 weeks later.

Did the woman even take your application? SHe should have...they just have to wait for you to be put in the system and then print your card. It's so odd how different each office does things!

Yes, she filled out my application into her computer system and gave me a receipt which stated that I would be notified when my SSN car is to be mailed out. I'm glad yours only took 3 weeks. I hope I get the same deal!

13 weeks for me, I'm afraid. It all depends on how busy your local office is and the amount of people in your area. Unfortunate for me, I live in the most densely populated area in the United States so it took me a very long time to get it.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Awesome! That's encouraging since we are using the same POE as you. Hopefully I get someone more competent

What does the POE have to do with applying for an SSN at your local SSN office?

Well your SSN isn't processed until the POE sends your information into "the system" ... At least that's what I understood. And I remember Suzuki suggesting that her information wasn't sent out very fast because the POE she used seemed to be rather disorganized/confused... That's all.
