Hello,

My fiancee is going to a temple tomorrow with her mother. She said something about having to do this 100 days after her grandmother (her mom's mom) died, but her grandmother died in early December, which puts us at almost 120 days. What is this business with 100 days? Is it 100 days after death, or 100 days after cremation? Or something else? Thanks.

After the death of a family member it is tradition to return to the Temple to attend what we would view as a sort of wake or final send off for the loved one. This can last up to 3 days in some families. The length of this is a reflection of the families weath or at least how they would like the community to think of the family in that sense. The timing of this should be about 100 days after cremation but its not set in stone.

Many times the event will include one or more Monks praying, friends discussing the virtues of the deceased, feasting, traditional music & drinking .

Ok, 100 days after the cremation and not 100 days after the death? I figured there was something lost in the translation when my fiancee tried to explain this to me.

Yes but keep in mind that the cremation is done 3 to 7 days after death. Again the 100 day milestone is arbitrary number. Some families do not cremate the body until 100 days after death & then have the wake at the 200 day point.
