Just thought I'd share that Ian and I were married over the weekend. I wondered what a courthouse wedding would be like, and it turned out to be wonderful. The ceremony took about 20 minutes, and was full of the customary, "Marriage is an important commitment" statements, which was really nice... it wasn't a quick "do you?" kind of ceremony. As soon as the judge opened her mouth, tears started rolling down my cheek (happy tears).

At the end, my dad was even crying, and he rarely does that. It was a really happy day!

We had a dinner at a really nice restaurant afterward. They were kind enough to reserve a table for 15 in a quiet area and their pastry chef even made us a cake. It was perfect.

We work so hard and so long to come to this place, it is really amazing when we get to the spot where we are actually saying "I do". :)

We all get there. This is the goal we work for, and it comes eventually. Keep working and I hope everyone makes good progress on their journey this week! :star:

I wish you a very happy marriage! It sounds like you had a wonderful wedding day :)

I was also pleasantly surprised how nice our ceremony turned out in San Francisco City Hall -- it's really such a beautiful place. We did not plan much for our marriage day, because we are planning a wedding later in April so our families can attend. But actually the ceremony was very special, and I also had tears in my eyes. A few friends came to City Hall and brought champagne and cupcakes. I organized (very last minute -- a week in advance) a dinner at a spanish restaurant and 18 of our friends came, and then we went dancing to a small club which had african music. It was a very special and fun day :)

I posted this in another forum here on VJ...but what is everybody here's thoughts on this?

Ok from my reading on here it seems that it is highly advisable for my fiancee to obtain her SS# BEFORE we get married, then apply for the name change. It also seems that you need to wait 2 weeks after POE for her information to be in the system to obtain the SS#. My fiancees POE date is Dec. 13th, I want to be married before the end of the year for tax purposes. If I wait two weeks then that puts applying for the SS# around Dec 28th or 29th...that is IF she is in the system by then, and I think that may be iffy because of the holidays. Then this would only leave us about 2 days for the marriage. My question is...does it really matter? Could we marry right after she arrives, then apply for the SS# 2 weeks after her arrival but apply using her maiden name, then when she receives her number, file for the name change? Is this doable?

Yeah this is pretty much what i did. I went to get my SSN 2 weeks after I arrived & I wasn't in their system yet so I went back later, still not in the system so I just applied for the number (they have to send away for it, it'll take 8 weeks) 2 days before we married. after u get married u have to apply for the marriage cert & that takes a month or more, we got married on the 11nov & still dont' have our cert. so If she waits untill after u get yr cert it'll be too late. so yes go ahead with yr wedding plans then go & apply for her SSN as soon as u can in her maiden name then change it when you finally get yr marriage cert. U can't apply for AOS till u have it either. Man i can't wait for it to come so I can apply for AOS!

Hope this makes sense :D

I just reviewed the site: http://www.losangelesmarriagelicense.com/m...quirements.html and it does not mention the need for a Social Security Card or number in order to get married in Los Angeles, CA. I also did a search of Las Vegas requirements, and neither did 'Vegas require a Social Security Card or number. Leidys arrived almost 2 weeks ago, so I am wondering if this requirement has to do with requirements in other respective states? Anyone?

Some states need Social Security cards to marry people, some dont.

I think it's as simple as that.

I'm getting married in Vegas, so I dont need mine.

Getting it anyway, cause it'll help me get onto my fiance's health insurance easier n stuff.

Sounds like you had a perfect day! :) I love the intimacy of a courthouse wedding. It was sweet of your friends to bring cupcakes and champagne.

Best wishes for the future! :)

I can speak for Nebraska, which doesn't require an SSN or even picking up the marriage license in person. :)

Like Rhiann said, it varies by state. You can Google marriage licenses on official state sites, and that would help. Here's more info on LA: http://www.lavote.net/clerk/marriages.cfm You can even apply online. :)

Good luck! Keep us posted!
