Senegalese food has a lot of rice and fish/chicken/beef, etc. The preparation takes about 4 hours, but it's soooo worth it!

They sometimes use utensils (often the guests and a few men will have a spoon), but not as a rule. I LOVE eating with my hands, though. Although, I never really mastered the technique-I always ended up getting food all over the place

That's fun that you're having a small restaurant do the catering.....I'm sooooo hungry! I should not have started this topic.

haha....I should, rhiann. My mom's side of the family is still proper old-school European, so they would not be big fans. Forks and knives for everyone!

I think I'll ease them all into the whole intercultural relationship thing and not overwhelm them on the first go :P

Hm, what about offering cutlery if they're not comfortable with eating with their hands?

And don't forget the wet naps, lols.

haha-I should have a BYOC- bring your own cutlery note on the invitations. If you don't bring your own, then you have to eat with your hands!

LOL!!!

I think it's a really neat idea to have some of both cultures there. Not sure how people would feel about eating with their hands though... but then again I was hoping to have a BBQ for mine. But might just end up with some Hors D'ouerves (?) instead. I dunno!

If everything goes as planned, we're having our reception at my favorite cozy restaurant in the world, The Red Beet , and they will be catering it. I haven't decided on a full menu yet, but I really want to serve coq au vin and have a croquembouche, so I will probably go with a french comfort food menu; seeing as how it's going to be mid winter and snowy up here :( I'm thinking wine and cheese will make an appearance too!

In English: Coq au vin is a French fricassee of rooster cooked with wine, lardons, mushrooms, and optionally garlic.

Croquembouche is actually a bit of a show in itself.

If they do it properly, they should bring out the tower of cream filled puffs and spin the caramel around them in front of everyone.

I did it cooking school, it's a nice spectacle, but it burns a bit

Eastern wedding VS Western wedding

Red wedding dresses are normal tradition color in other cultures like Chinese and Indians. Red is thought to bring in good fortune and joy, so most weddings focus around red décor, flowers, favors and most importantly, a red wedding gown. The common thing about Chinese weddings is that brides often change clothes after the ceremony. Many dress up in their traditional colored wedding dress during the ceremony and then change into something more casual during the reception, others do it the other way around.

The traditional wedding color is red and only in modern times that Chinese brides have started wearing the white wedding dress. Historically and traditionally white is not a good colour as it is worn for mourning.

In Western culture, the bride usually wears only one dress throughout the occassion. In some western wedding, some brides are opting to change into something more a comfortable evening gown to be able to dance in the later part of the wedding. White wedding dress is one of the more recent wedding customs from the 1840s beginning with Queen Victoria.

The gift of an engagement ring was first practiced when the groom ‘purchased’ his bride. By giving a token, such as a ring, he makes a promise to marry her in return for her dowry, social status, and among other things. The tradition of giving a diamond began not so long ago in the 19th century. It was believed that diamonds represented everlasting love helped by strong marketing of Da Beers making it a Western tradition today.

A common tradition that is shared between the two culture is the wedding veil. The veil is used to protect the bride from being seen by evil spirits and jealous suitors. It is considered bad luck for the groom to see the bride on their wedding day before the ceremony.

Bells are going to chime!

I'm looking into finding a nice chinese dress to wear after the wedding for dinner.

One of the long ones, if possible.

I don't think red though, since red really isn't my colour.

And I'm not wearing a veil, I think they're tacky. I'm getting flowers put in my hair :P

Gold is the other main GOOD LUCK color.

Gold, eh.

I can't pull of gold either.

I had gold earrings once and they were hideous on me.

I'm an extremely pale white person
