Asking about replacement of middle name in SSN?

Hello, guys! It`s been a month that I haven`t posted here but now I am back and asking again for some important matter.

Yesterday I applied for SSN here in my place and I was confused about what middle name what to put in my SSN card, my husband told me to use my middle name when I was still single because he said it was the practice here in USA. So, I did it, but in my heart I really want to use my last name as my middle name when I was still single in my new status now as married woman. Also this week we will be sending my AOS application and I put there my last name when I was single like the practices in Philippine culture if a woman got married they automatically became their last name as middle name and their last name from their husband name, that`s what I want to do also in my AOS .Now, I have confusion because in my AOS Application I use my last name when I was single as my middle name and my husband last name as my new name.

My question is , " Can I still change my middle name I put in my SSN card application? Because I want it to be similar in the middle name I will be using in my AOS. Could this create conflicts if I do that? Or just let it be and follow the middle name I use in my SSN?

Thanks and hoping to get some answer and ideas what to do. God bless and have a great day!

They say...when you are in Rome, do what the Romans do.

But with regards to our names, I say use the Philippine way especially for future processes like renewing your passport.

I also had an issue with the middle name but I was able to incorporate the Philippine way in all my documents. I dropped my Mother's maiden name when I got married and now Im using my father's surname as my middle name. If I had not done this I would have problems amending my passport to my married name because the Philippine embassy would follow the Philippine way with regards to name changes. Now, all my identification papers like my GC, Driver's License and SSN carries my father's surname as my middle name. I also used the same when I was looking for a job.

Since you already applied for the SSN,I believe you just can't change it until your AOS have been approved. I remember that after marriage, I applied to change my SSN name to my married name but they refused . Once I received my green card, it was easy.

With regards to your AOS, use your father's surname as your middle name.

Goodluck

Use your maiden surname as your middle name that is how we Pinoys do it here in US so don't be confuse and stick on it. Don't keep on using different middle names when filling out something it might create a problem for you later you know, stuff like that so just be careful.I had my passport amended,Report of marriage,Report of birth done at the Philippine Consulate and used my maiden surname as my middle done. Good luck!

If the SSN application is still pending you should be able to go into the SSA office with your marriage certificate, I-94 and passport to ask that your maiden name be used as your middle name on the application.

If the application has been processed you will need to do it through a replacement card application.

RM 00203.210 Changing Numident Name Data

https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203210

D6. Change of Middle Name to Maiden Name on SSN Card

Lisa Smith Jones applies for a replacement SSN card in that name because she lost her SSN card. The prior Numident records show the names Lisa Marie Smith and Lisa Jones. She submits a driver’s license showing her name as Lisa S. Jones.

It is a common occurrence in the U.S. for a woman to take her maiden name as the middle name after marriage. Because a legal name generally consists of a first or given name and a surname or family name, whether the identity document submitted shows the middle name is included, omitted or incorrect does not matter.

SSA can process the change of Lisa’s middle name. This is not a legal name change because the first and last names have not changed.

NOTE: In cases where there are questions about whether the applicant is the number holder, it may be necessary to request additional evidence of identity and the have the applicant explain middle name changes.

Going to also need proof of authorization to work authorization

From and including: Thursday, February 5, 2009

To, but not including : Thursday, April 2, 2009

It is 56 days from the start date to the end date, but not including the end date

So you still have time to make the change based on your K-1 status and using your marriage certificate I-94 and passport if you need to apply for a replacement card.

4. Subsequent Name Changes - Based on the Same Event

Subsequent name changes based on a previously submitted marriage document are permitted as long as the new surname can be derived from the marriage document. For example, if Laura Michaels changed her surname on her SSN card to her husband’s surname (Williams) and later decides to change her surname to a compound name (Michaels-Williams) which is a combination of her original surname and her husband’s surname, you may change her surname to Michaels-Williams as long as you can derive Michaels-Williams from the marriage document. Since the marriage document states Laura Michaels married Henry Williams, you can derive her new surname, Michaels-Williams, from the marriage document.

You need to keep in mind that you will want to work and file taxes using the name on your SSN record.

Hi there,

I just submitted my AOS and done with SSN.I used my surname/last name when I was single as my middle name and my married name/husband's last name as my last name to all the documents/forms I signed.AOS,EAD,AP forms,State ID,and SSN.I followed the Philippine way so I won't have problems in the future.

My hubby told me that here in the U.S. my middle name will be my maiden name when I was single but I told him I will not do that because it's different in PI.So I used my last name when I was single as my middle name.

Hello! Thank you guys for all the replies! I appreciate it so much! I went again earlier this morning in Social Security Office here in my place and I have my middle name corrected. It`s good thing that the lady attended to me last Tuesday(March 31)was so helpful and she said that my paper`s were not yet processed so it`s good thing that I have it corrected asap.

Thank you so much again . God bless! and Advance Happy Easter!

Not totally a good thing since your application has not been processed, so that means they haven't been able to verify your status.

RM 00203.210 C. Procedure - Immigration Document as Evidence of Legal Name:

When an alien applies for an SSN card, we presume the name on the immigration document is the legal name unless the applicant presents evidence of a legal name change, e.g., marriage, which occurred after the immigration document was issued.

RM 00203.210 Changing Numident Name Data:

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203210

However, when an alien requests an SSN or replacement card, we must verify his or her documents/current status with the appropriate Bureau of the Department of Homeland Security. If the initial online verification is not possible through the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) system, we may need to send a Form G-845 to the appropriate Bureau of the Department of Homeland Security for manual verification.

Social Security field offices can submit an additional electronic online verification, which in the majority of applications eliminates the need to send a Form G-845 along with copies of the applicant’s immigration documents.

However, some applications still require a copy of the immigration document(s) being verified to be sent at the request of the Department of Homeland Security along with the Form G-845 for manual verification.

If the applicant has changed his/her name after an immigration document, i.e. I-94, was issued, e.g., married and is now using the married name, but has not obtained a corrected immigration document showing the new name; this is not a name discrepancy for enumeration purposes, i.e. SAVE clearance, if the applicant can provide an acceptable legal name change document to establish the new name.

You need to find out where in the verification process you are and why they haven't been able verify your status.

What is the procedure when you have two given names? Like Maria Belinda? It gets very confusing because in the US, they take Belinda as my middle name, when I want to use my maiden name as my middle name. We are now in the process of applying for my Petition for Alien Relative (my husband is the US citizen). May I just drop the Belinda in all the immigration forms?

You should have left this post where it was. There is a specific internationally recognized naming convention that applies to the Philippines that does not apply to other countries and it causes confusion and problems specifically for those from the Philippines.
