My husband used the one Emancipation linked. He only needed it for a month as well. He did not need to make a claim, but they were very good about getting him set up immediately and answering his questions about how it would work if he did need to use it.

How foolish would it be to walk around without medical coverage for 50 days? That was my plan... But I have little to no understanding of how the US medical system works. Is it so stupid expensive that if I need to go to a doctor once in those 50 days I would be better off getting coverage? Or maybe... is it not legal to walk around without coverage? That would be kinda weird, but I've heard weirder things...

Honestly, I'm 21 and I haven't been in a hospital since the day I was born. I don't think I'm going to need one...

I plan to do the same thing I think. But, I will be getting married with in 4-5 days of getting there, so it wouldn't be 50 days, that is kind of long. I plan to go about 5 days or so.

50 days is a long time to go without insurance. You just never know what could happen - you may be healthy, but accidents happen. I think if you are going to go longer than a week, you should consider some of the options here. They aren't that much for peace of mind.

I would never chance a visit outside of Canada without insurance. Anything can happen. I currently have health insurance with CAA. It was cheap & it lasts 1 year(so I pretty much renew it when I renew my CAA membership).

I'm not sure what the deal is if you don't have a Canadian address & have already moved to the U.S....I've never checked into that.

Wow I've never given this a second thought. I don't have international travel insurance (unless my dad has it through his work? I have no clue) and I travel to the US and beyond quite frequently. Maybe I just enjoy living life dangerously? I guess that's a side effect of being young and reckless. Thanks for the heads-up guys, i'll look into it...

Honestly, how much does medical care cost in the US if you have no insurance? What if I fall down and break my arm and have to go to the ER... How much would I pay? Anyone have any idea?

we have insurance--but the hospital gave us the cost if we didnt have insurance--------2005 we went to ER as wife sprained her ankle! After a 3 hr wait and only seeing the Dr for like 15 minutes, included a Xray and a pregnancy test (sop when women taking xray) our bill would have been over $1500

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I had to make a trip to a doctors office last time I was down there, it cost me $150 for the visit. Luckily Alberta Healthcare coved a percentage of that cost after I got home.

If I had to go to the hospital it would have cost way more. They charge you for every test and medical supplies that they have to use on you.

Cheaper to get some temperary medical insurance than go without.

I'm a RN student at this time (33 more days, lol) and at 1 hospital where i have had clinical at, you get charged for EVERYTHING!! In the supply room, we have a computer and it has a "scanning gun" much like u see at walmart, and when we get supplies for you, yes even a toothbrush, we scan the bar code, and the patient gets charged for it!

With regards to my wifes pregnancy test she had to get before the X-ray, I belive it was billed at $60, the exact same test at ur drug store is what, $20!!

A friend of mine was asked if she was pregnant before a dental procedure... she said, "No. Well- I mean I COULD be, but not on purpose." They wouldn't do the procedure then, so she took a test and what do you know... pregnant! Haha- what a way to find out. Now she and her husband have a healthy and happy baby girl.

Oh wow! Really, that's a funny way to find out your preggers! When I went to the dentist a few weeks ago, they asked and I said no, but I mean I guess I COULD have been, technically, LOL

Honestly, I'm 21 and I haven't been in a hospital since the day I was born. I don't think I'm going to need one...

Nope u dont have to have insurance, millions of Americans do not!! Just see a Dr isnt going to bankrupt you, but if you get into an accident and rushed to hospital will!

True, a Dr. appointment (very basic) is usually over $100 and just calling an ambulance is like $3,000! Imagine what the hospital's room price per day + treatment etc... are!!

No kidding! My mom was in the hospital for an extended time 2 years ago and her daily medication alone was hundreds of dollars a day. I can't even imagine what her total bill would have been with the room and all the extra care etc.... thankfully she was in Canada and it was all covered by OHIP. After that experience I'll never go with out health insurance.

When I shared info with Fiance' last night about when he gets covered by my insurance, he just figured he'd go the 30 days without insurance. His response... "I figured you'd try to kill me off AFTER we were married, not before!" :bonk: Oyyy. What a sense of humor... or lack thereof.

Please do not attempt to go almost two months without insurance. If something happens to you, it could cost you so much money you may have to re-arrange your entire life.

I've had family members here in the US that got hurt and didn't have insurance...they lost their homes or had to remortgage their homes.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

That's a ridiculously scary thought! I'm definitely rethinking my plan. I appreciate the advice from everyone... I was blissfully unaware of the costs of health care in the US! I can't even believe those prices...
