If the trip seems to long to handle, either get drunk on the plane or do not sleep the night before, you will pass out in no time as soon as you hit your seat ;)

I like taking an alprazolam when flying, except I get scared of not getting down on my connecting flight and remain on the plane to fly elsewhere so I end up not sleeping much at all, since I know I have lots of connecting flights, back when I used to fly down from Miami to Rio one long flight no connections, ah bliss, one alprazolam and I'd wake up landing, didn't even see them serving breakfast in the plane or anything.

I can't sleep on flights, not even the 14 hour long flights. I get so tired that I nod off but my body won't stay asleep in a sitting position, just not gonna happen. And I am not going to take anything to knock me out since I also have a little one to take care of during the flight now. :P I envy those who can just sleep on planes or in cars. I can't! :( I need to be more reclined. So by the time we get to somewhere like India, I had been awake for like 36 hours or more. (24 hours about of traveling, plus the few hours of being awake that day before leaving for the trip)

Ohhh I know what you mean!

I also dose off every now and then, but can't seem to stay asleep long enough to avoid feeling the turbulence or uneasiness of the flight. It just amazes me how people can sleep throughout the whole flight and wake up when we are just about to finally land!

When we landed back at Newark from India (that flight took 15 hours) I was so exhausted and my nerves were a bit shot not just from the ride but having a year old to take care of while being exhausted too. (hubby felt exhausted too of course, he caught a little sleep though)

When the flight attendants announced that we need to be buckled in because it was going to be a bumpy descent and landing, I just thought NOOO I don't want to fly anymore!! Even my husband got a little nervous about the descent. But I had to get on another plane anyway a few hours later. And I did it, and survived. But I was very happy to be back in Tampa when we landed!! With all that said, I know I can get back on a plane again the next time we visit India.

You guys are AWESOME!!

I think, for me, it's the claustrophobia, the not being able to leave. Having no control. Yep, these are my Oprahs to conquer, but you guys are just the best. The BEST!! Thank you - I'm gonna head down to the doctor for some good drugs, LOL. And my Honey said they show Flight of the Conchords on Virgin Atlantic, so I got that going for me ... which is nice.

*HUGS* to all!!

  • 2 months later...

I had to visit this thread again after the recent disaster. I've got my Propranolol all ready, planning to fly out of LAX on Virgin June 16 whether my Honey passes the interview or not. And I ordered Virgin's Flying Without Fear book. Reading all of your past replies reminds me of why I'm here. You are all such great people. No one made me feel stupid for my fear, and it's nice to know I'm not alone. I thank you, hope everyone's okay.

Yeah, I'm going to Brazil in August for 2 months, this one will also be a killer in terms of connecting flights and layovers. I'll go San Juan - Chicago - São Paulo - Brasília - Porto Velho. Adding all flight times and layovers hubby and will be "on the road" for two whole days. We leave August 17th around noon and we arrive there on August 19th around 2 am (meaning it's the 18th but 2 hours past midnight).

We'll be stuck in São Paulo's airport for about 7 hours. <_<

Luis was never afraid of flying, but since the last time he flew (which was his last trip to Brazil in 2006) there has been a few major crashes like the most recent one (The Gol one and the TAM one in Brazil, plus a few a round the world) and he doesn't even want to talk about the news on finding Air France 477 or whatnot now. I'm still not afraid of flying, but I sure will feel better once we get there, and then once we get back.

If the trip seems to long to handle, either get drunk on the plane or do not sleep the night before, you will pass out in no time as soon as you hit your seat ;)

This is the answer. And don't just get drunk ON the plane, make sure you check in early, and spend a good few hours in the airport bars before boarding. That way, you won't give a #### (or at least much less of a ####) if the thing nosedives into the Atlantic.

Seriously though, you can't live your life worrying about this ######: if your number's up, your number's up. There's not a damn thing you can do about it. I think a lot of the whole fear of flying thing, comes from your being completely in the hands of someone (the pilot) and something (the aircraft) else. Sure, you're more likely to peg out on the road, but at least you (assuming you're the driver) have at least some of the outcome of any potential accident - however little - in your own hands.

Personally, if I can realistically get to where I need to be by some means other than flying, then that's what I'll do, but if fly I must, then it's "hammer time" in the alehouse beforehand.

Works for me.

Getting drunk would solve the issue if they actually let drunk people board the planes. :P
