SARATOGA SPRINGS — James Tedisco took Saratoga County, but the winner in Tuesday’s special election for the 20th Congressional District was too close to call.

Both Republican Tedisco, the Assembly minority leader, and Scott Murphy, a venture capitalist from Glens Falls, ended the night at about 11 p.m. with upbeat speeches before enthusiastic supporters.

The six-week campaign could stretch into another couple of weeks. New York agreed to count overseas absentee ballots until April 13 — instead of the initial April 7 cutoff — after the U.S. Department of Justice sued the state for not giving overseas absentee voters enough time to return ballots.

According to the state board of elections, there were 10,055 absentee ballots issued in the 10-county congressional district.
