Sweden unveils 'ambitious' clean energy strategy

The common man does not do what is right for the society they live in. They do what is cheaper and more convenient for themselves. That tendency to be selfish is human nature and I do not deny that I myself can be very selfish. That is where govern-ment can play a role in encouraging, offering incentives and punitive measures to change the society.

This is what's so sad about liberalism - it's the regressive distrust in the individual's capacity to decide what's good for him/herself. Only the paternalistic Government can decide what's good for you. A return to infancy, in a way.

I have always hated paternalism, that's why I will never live in Sweden. Not that the country is too inviting anyway, with their 50% taxes and failed economy (wonder where the money for this "ambitious" program will come from?)

Has anyone every wondered about the problem with transmission? How would the grid handle electric cars when the system here still use antiquated 110v. At least jump to 220 or 240V (aussie style). Without some serious network upgrade its not going to happen.

PS the higher the voltage the more efficient use of power. Don't believe me? check out your PC power supply. Its efficiency increase when running on a 220/240 system.

Well, the main transmittion lines run into the thousands of volts. It gets kicked down at the transformer on the poll outside your house. All that would be needed is a different transformer and not a new electric grid. That being said it would be a real b!tch to scrap every electronic device you now own and replace it with something different.

Please do dig deeper. You will find that if we can perfect N-fusion that all other alternative energy sources are redundant. It makes more sense to bring the equivalent to the sun here rather than trying to convert the energy that shines on our planet. It is just more efficient. It would also be cheaper than papering every rooftop with solar cells that only work for half the day and a basement full of batteries to run things when it's dark.

BTW, look at the link again. It is a government web site. This is funded by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. IMO it is a very good use of public money.

Gary,

This is from that website you linked to.

"With the appropriate research, development and engineering program, LIFE engines could begin to provide electricity to U.S. consumers within 20 years, and could provide a very significant fraction of U.S. and international electricity demand by 2100."

Thats a long time! Solar concentration or photovoltaic cells could be developed in that time too.

Solar would have its place in the meantime but we shouldn't try to remake our entire energy grid on it. We would just be doubling our costs. I would be in favor of N-fision plants to replace the fossil fuel ones for now and then later retrofit them to N-fusion when the technology is perfected. No sense in doing everything twice.

Is there a way to have a duel system? Like the switchover to digital tv for example. That way any new electronic devices can be made for the higher voltage but the current equipment can be used until it dies.

Luz's house in PI had both 110 and 220 in it. All it needs is a transformer to change the voltage. The real problem with that is you might plug in to the wrong socket and fry your device. Luz did that several times. Some things, like computers and battery chargers, already can handle either voltage. It isn't that hard to put a PS like that in anything.

Yeah, what I think we need to do is have a national switchover, much like digital TV. So set a future date for upping the voltage. From now start manufacturing appliances that are dual 110/220 or 240 volts. 240 volts being future proof. Then after five years (or something like that), have a complete switchover. Anyone with older appliances can get some sort of transformer. It's a huge project but well worth the investment. You basically get 2400W out of a standard outlet in AUS. Using less amps too which is much safer. All new homes would have a new plug and wiring which would be able to handle the higher voltage.

Brownouts let alone the lights dimming are very rare in AUS. I can run every appliance at once in the house and I won't see a light dim.

I can only imagine the hundreds of thousands of jobs such a crucial project would create. It would be the largest national project since post WWII.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.
