MOVERS: FOR PERSONAL BELONGINGS TO US

I called around for quotes on Movers... I got a quote from Can American, they seem to be pretty reputable and gave me the best price.

My stuff will obviously not accompany me. She said I would have to complete a Customs form called 3299 declaration form.

Anyone ever have to fill this out? Is this specific to Canadians, or is it a US form?

I'm not sure if I should post this here, or under moving.

They also need a copy of my Visa or something showing I have authority to move the stuff. Will my stamped passport be sufficient?

Thanks

Everyone here who moved their articles with a company filled out the 3299

It is a Declaration for free entry of unaccompanied articles, it is an American form - Dept. of Homeland Security and is specifically for shipments from Canada to the U.S..

You will need to give them a copy of your visa from your passport - they may or may not ask for copies of other ID as well. Your mover should be able to tell you specifically what they require.

Just to add to what Trailmix has said..... my movers provided the form for me to sign. Your movers should have you sign one when you sign the contract. Once you cross the border you need to send them proof of immigration. Mine required my SIN, visa type, POE, date of entry, and entry type (plane, train, automobile, etc). They also needed a copy of the visa as well as a copy of the I-94 to prove entry.

YOU ROCK!!!:dance::dance: I should just start addressing my emails to you lol!

So I guess, I will have to fax them the visa after I cross over, as it will be sealed in an envelope before that?

They did ask for 3 pieces of ID....

My movers provided me with the copy of the form as well - and they completed filling it out when they loaded my belongings on the truck. I provided them before hand with the copy of my K-1 visa (it will be in your passport, not the envelope), and the information page of my passport. Then, when I had activated the K-1, I faxed them copies the K-1 visa with the stamped information on it and the I94 (entry/exit visa) that was stapled into my passport at the border when I activated the K-1. The I-94 will have your immigration class on it as well as provide the date by which you need to get married (9 days). Everything worked out really well and all my belongings arrived in perfect condition (well, ok, in the condition in which they were sent which wasn't always perfect, hehehehe). I packed everything except the good china myself and had them pack the china just in case anything happened to it in transit then it would be covered through their insurance.

Do you need to notify the boarder of items to follow, when you activate your K1? Should I give them an inventory?

Thanks guys :)

Thanks, I had a look at that link. I am confused about 1 thing. Do you physically have to be there when your items cross? It says on that site, that if you cannot attend, you may designate a friend or relative. But isn't the freight company good enough? I'm sure stuff gets shipped all the time? as long as they have all your documentation, visa, and 3299 inventory etc?

Thanks

I was not present when I moved down in 2005 nor was any relative or friend.

It went smoothly

Good luck.

Okay, I didn't go look at the link - but I will... in just a bit... but I was wondering....

When my fiance moves over here after the interview, we are bringing his items in our cars. As in, my dad will be driving his truck, my mom driving my SUV, and I'll be in my fiance's car with him. Please correct me if I'm wrong... if individuals (friends, family, etc.) are bring items over, my fiance needs to give us all a form of "power of attorney" to bring his items across the border. We will drive caravan style, and will all go through the lane/line at the POE. Would it be best if my fiance was in the first car or the "last" car?

You and your fiance should be in the first car. When you pull up to the border advise the border official that you are activating his K-1 and that the two vehicles immediately behind you are being driven by your relatives who are helping to move his personal belongings to the US and that you are also importing two vehicles - your fiance's truck and car (unless by 'his' truck, you meant the truck belongs to your Dad and not your fiance, hehehe). He should have a master list of all of the items in all of the vehicles and then each vehicle should have a list for the items in that vehicle. You will also need the compliance letters for your fiancee's car (and truck if it is his) and the necessary documents for importing vehicles to the US. All of the vehicles need to pull into secondary as none of his belongings can enter the US until he does. Follow the directions the border official gives you about the other vehicles and whether or not your relatives can accompany you two inside or to stay with the vehicles. When you are inside processing the K-1 and the vehicle importation, provide the officer with the lists of belongings being imported in the vehicles. He may or may not want to see it (we had everything available but they didn't look at it). As you and your parents are US citizens you shouldn't have any difficulties, but they do need to wait until he has officially entered the country before his belongings can enter.

Poprocks - you are making me think that you didn't actually look at the form :o

Have a look at the 3299 - it's a form for 'unaccompanied' items
