Moral of the story: Once you've had Mac, you don't go back.

Or Linux. I'm not sure if this virus would be a danger if you have a dual-boot machine (Linux/Windows or OSX/Windows), but since a lot of people have these setups today, I'd be wary -- even if your primary OS isn't Windows.

Maybe, Mac are pretty good about security updates for their software. I do not run 10.5 with an Intel powered mac as my laptop is almost 5 years old now so I should be fine. I'll check tonight though just to be sure.

true..i heard it was mainly an europe issue..

Its a virus transmitted via email/internet. There is no such thing as mainly a europe issue (world wide web).

My mum fixes computers fr the Royal Airforce and has been fighting this one for months. Its driving her nuts, even though they are getting updated instructions from microsoft every couple of days. Trouble is, when you have millions of computers infected with it you need a fix that can be disseminated in the same way as the virus itself.

Word.

Probably because there isn't enough macs around to actually bother writing code to do anything with them...

I mean, if you want to go big time, you would have to go the PC route...

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

Guys, it's all well and good to talk about the accolades of using a Mac or running Linux...but let's be real here - most people around the world are running on Windows and this virus is a real concern.

Correct but if people knew that Macs don't get affeted by these kinds of things more people would switch. However this would mean that hackers and cyber criminals would then attack the new dominant machine on the market, thus wiping out one of macs big advantages. Forget I said anything. Macs are rubbish, don't buy macs so that my lovely machine will stay safe. Thank you all for your cooperation.

I don't even understand the allure of creating viruses and other malware. Why put so much time and effort into something where you'll probably never see the results? A large-scale virus like this one is unusual, so in most cases, the virus will infect a machine without the creator of it ever knowing.

We had an office meeting yesterday. The owners are very concerned about this one. They said the subject line of an infected e-mail says something about April Fool in it. I'm not sure about that part -- I think it's mostly already resident, as others have said. But we've been told that if we open any attachment to an April Fool e-mail and get the virus, we're fired, no joke.

Also read that it can be hazardous to research this virus online as some "help" sites are rigged to infect visitors.
