Main issue I have with the new movie is that I don't like the screenwriters (and they're into everything at the moment - and most of what they do totally stinks - Fringe, Transformers).

With the series being dead in the water after the last movie (which really was bad), they had to reinvent it somehow. That meant broadening the appeal to hook a new generation of fans who didn't grow up with the original series, the original movies or the TNG stuff.

Its kind of like what they did with Star Wars - which had mixed reactions to the original fans as they realised that they'd basically outgrown the series, and the new stuff wasn't aimed at them.

This version of Star Trek bears more than a few similarities to Starship Troopers. Not surprising perhaps - though I enjoyed the original series as a kid, the Federation did come to resemble fascism with a smiley face.

When they revive the characters once again, 40 years from now...I think it will be the right time to have Kirk and Spock as gay lovers.
