Ok, this is a question for the Trekkies - according the movie's official website - Spock was raised in an environment that downplayed emotions and put the highest importance on logic. In the original TV series, Capt. Kirk was always prodding or teasing Spock for supposedly having no emotions. So, it's not that Vulcans don't have emotions, it's just that they regard emotions as illogical, correct?

Nope, they have the full range of emotions. They just suppress them.

I am an original Trekker. Notice I don't say Trekkie. Trekkers are fans without the makup. :P I started watching Star Trek back in the 60's when it first came out. I have seen and I own every single episode from every series plus all the movies. I dare say I could take on anyone in a Trek trivia contest.

LOL...Trekkers sounds better. I love the original series. The rich color and clean set designs are what really make it stand out. One thing I noticed that the newer TV shows never tried to duplicate, was the orchestral music they used (like so many shows from that era). Also, the lighting was impeccable, IMO.

Spock claimed that the ferocity and violence of the Vulcan emotions almost destroyed them as a race, but through logic and discipline they learned to control, and supress them. There are some contradictions, however. In Journey to Eden, or whatever that episode was called, one of the young rebels was an aquaintance of Spock, and Spock did show some emotion, in the playing of his harplike instrument. One of the Star Trek movies, where Spock's brother hijacked the Enterprise to journey to the center of the Galaxy, showed even another heretical aspect of the Vulcan psych, complete with emotion.

What a great subtext to the story....especially as it contrasted against Kirk's easiness with showing his emotions, most often at appropriate times. I think that was a huge part of Star Trek's appeal to audiences.

Remember, Spock was "half-Human/Vulcan", so he had a harder time to control his emotions, even with "Vulcan" training.

Yeah, but I think the real idea wasn't that Vulcan didn't have emotions, but rather they regarded emotionally motivated thoughts and actions as illogical. I find that explanation a lot more appealing than to believe that a race of intelligent beings are completely devoid of emotions.

Nothing can beat the original series. I think my second favorite series would be Enterprise. I though they did a very good job in giving the history of the whole Trek world. I liked Next Generation but I thought they were full of themselves most of the time. Voyager was really good also. Janeway as captian was great to see. DS9 was my least favorite. Not enough action and I just couldn't get into it. Of the movies the best was the Wrath of Kahn of course. Nothing could beat that one.

True - but as pointed out, the Vulcan's did have emotions, and it almost destroyed them, so they controlled them, with reason and logic, thanks to the teachings of Surak.

Without this logic/reasoning, Vulcan's are very emotional.

I've got a nerd story about Wrath of Khan. I went to go see it with 2 of my nerd friends. When Capt. Kirk tells Khan, "Here it comes," we couldn't control ourselves and I repeated the line out loud. This lady behind me told me to shut up. Hahahaha. Later, after the movie was done - I had to call my Dad from a payphone to have him pick us up in our family station wagon. We were about as far away from cool as they come. :jest:

I wonder if they are going to do another series. I need a weekly ST fix. Luz keeps asking me why I watch Enterprise over and over. Maybe I will dig out my original series DVD's for a change of pace.

I remember when I would go to see the Star Trek movies in the theater there would be very few women there and the rest would be guys who hardly ever saw the light of day...

I loved the original series and the next generation. Voyager was the last series that I loved... after that it was all down hill imho.
