Hi Im wondering if anyone can help.

Im just about to submit my packet for immigration, I am canadian, and my husband is the US citizen. For taxes, i had no income in 2008.

How do i file my canadian taxes? When it asks if im married it also asks for my husbands SIN and income, how do i go about any part of the filing? Do i absolutly have to file it this year?

And for my husband, the US citizen, how does he go about filing his with regards to the married questions?

Hi Canuckwife,

I'm not sure if this helps, but this is what I did:

Likewise, I'm the Canadian and my husband is the American. During my final year in Canada (2006), I had no income either (I was a student then). But in 2007, I filed my "final Canadian tax return" with Revenue Canada from here in the USA (to prevent tax fraud and to officially notify the Canadian government that I'm not living in Canada anymore). It was easy really, as on all of the lines I simply put $0, for income....

As well, on my end, I just said that I was filing "married" and put my SIN and put a letter saying that I was a student in Canada before. For my husband's SIN I put "None" and explained that he was an "American citizen with no SIN and had/has no income or earnings in Canada". I also enclosed a cover letter, further explaining of the situation, and that "I do not owe Revenue Canada any money".

Be careful though, if you get GST refund cheques, as you have to return them back if you are in the USA and are not a resident in Canada anymore.

Hope this helps. Good luck on the rest of your immigration journey too.
