Even though you still have minimal ties to Ontario - your car - you are considered a non-resident of Canada effective the date you physically crossed the border to live in the US and a resident alien of the US on the same date, even though you don't have a green card yet. Residency for tax purposes is not necessarily the same as residency for immigration purposes.

You might want to get your license changed so that the U.S. doesn't ever dispute your greencard status.

You are a non-resident of Canada when you leave and activate your visa in the U.S.

wow, been in the USA for 1 yr and stil have CDn drivers license and plates! hopefully you dont get in an accident, as you could be in a world of hurt! One usually only has a certain # of days before you have to get USA drivers license/plates

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I drove around with my Canadian car and my Ontario license for exactly a year before I got a state license. The laws of my state did not allow me to get a license until I had a green card.

Each state has its own DMV regualtions, so you have to check with that state! it would be interesting if one got into an accident in the USA, after a yr and u stil had Cdn plates/insurance and drivers license, what would happen. Of course investigators,most likely don't investigate that deeply.

I got a couple tickets during this time and actually someone did rear-end me. Luckily there was no damage to either of our cars so we just parted ways. My canadian insurance company however said they would cover me if I got into an accident so I did clear it with them.

I never got a ticket until I came here to NJ. Now in two years I have had 4 :lol:

On the New jersey turn pike last summer, over 100 cops pass us with their lights/sirens on!! zoom, zoom, zoom, was like what the hell is going on.
