Hello I-751 filers:

I have a question regarding the tax return document. We filed for tax return jointly (for 07 and 08) using turbotax. We have the copy of our return but how do we prove that this is exactly what we filed? Since it was done electronically, we don't have anything from IRS. I have read that people provide IRS transcripts. What is that?

Thanks,

Vibha

I-751 process:

4/06/09: Mailed I-751 to VSC by Express mail

4/07/09: Received by VSC

4/17/09: Check clearance.

4/20/09: NOA1 received in mail (receipt date: 4/08/09)

4/30/09: Biometric appt. letter received (appt. on May 15th)

5/05/09: Walk-in biometric done

9/02/09: Approval Email (touch on USCUS site)

9/03/09: Approval letter received (decision date: 8/27/09)

9/09/09: Touch, but no change in status on USCIS site.

9/11/09: Green card rec'd.

Call 800-829-1040 24/7 and order tax transcripts for the years you want. They are free and took 6 days for me to get mine by mail . If you are in a hurry you can call during busibess hours and have them faxed to you. They are more valid than copies of your returns as they show you filed.

We used turbo tax also for our '08 taxes and just attached my husband's W2'S to the copies of our tax returns and had IRS transcripts for '06 and '07. If you still have plenty of time, request for transcripts it's more acceptable and less papers 2 pages only for each year.

As already suggested, if you have time, call the IRS office and request for the transcript. It takes about 2 weeks maximum days to get to you, all things being equal. I did same but added the turbo tax returns as well. Getting the transcripts are no hassle so call the IRS offfice and you will be ok.

You might find this info useful, from the IRS official website:

"Most needs for tax return information can be met with a computer print-out of your return information called a "transcript". A transcript may be an acceptable substitute for an exact copy of a return by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services and lending agencies for student loans and mortgages. A "tax return transcript" will show most line items contained on the return as it was originally filed. If you need a statement of your tax account which shows changes that you or the IRS made after the original return was filed, however, you must request a "tax account transcript". Both transcripts are generally available for the current and past three years and are provided free of charge. The period in which you will receive the transcript varies from within ten to thirty business days from the time the IRS receives your request for the tax return or tax account transcript.

You can obtain a transcript by calling 800–829–1040 and following the prompts in the recorded message or by completing and mailing Form 4506-T (PDF), Request for Transcript of Tax Return, to the address listed in the instructions."

If you still have time, like others suggested, call the IRS and order your tax return transcript(s). If you have access to a fax machine, you can ask the IRS agent to fax the transcripts to you, no need to wait 2 weeks. Also, you may wish to visit your local IRS office if you are in their area, and have them print out your transcript to you. That's what I did. To find your local IRS office, Find local IRS office.

Hey VSSKS: You can send in your copies (unsigned) I also did the same - since they are filed electronically they are not signed copies and I have not had any problems doing this. You can order the transcripts if that makes you feel better and you have the time. Good Luck

Anyway, I finally got in touch with an IRS rep just today and told me that, normally, it would take 6-8 weeks before a transcript is made available to the tax payer. If tax forms are filed electronically, then it would take 10-21 days.

The above quote was from another thread, posted not too long ago. Some were able to request only after 6 days.

Mine took a bit longer, exactly two weeks, including weekends. Keep in mind that I have no refunds. I owed the government money. :crying:

Thanks for the advice!

I went to the local IRS office today, they printed out transcripts for me in no time. That was great!

So those who are in a hurry, visit the local IRS office. They had my 08 transcript, which I filed just 2 weeks ago.

I have submitted copies of our electronically filed income tax returns too (with copies of our refunds attached), including mailers from IRS informing us that they adjusted our returns due to additional child tax credits. I'm going to request tax transcripts from IRS though - just in case the USCIS send me an RFE (I'm hoping they will not :) )

Never ever say never
