This response was totally disrespectful and in poor taste.

Bonjour Juleali

I see that you filed for K1 so you will be getting married here. I suggest you and your fiance become involved in a Haitian church and the Houngan/Priest will certainly incorporate the tradition into your ceremony. What city are you in?

Yeah, we want to get married here in the states. I live about half way between Montreal and Boston, in VT. I lived in Boston for quite a while (8yrs) and there is a wonderful Haitian community there. If we don't settle in Boston after we get married, we'll defiantly be spending a lot of time there. Thanks for your response.

Bonsoir that is fabulous, you will definitely be in good hands within the Haitian community, they will be extremely resourceful. Aaah Jacmel, now you are making me homesick  I haven't looked at your timeline yet but do you have long left in your journey.

We've pretty much just begun. We sent in our K-1 application in November and have yet to hear anything about our NOA 2...I hope it will be very soon. Jacmel is the best. I spent almost two years living there and miss every minute away. I went back in February for a week to see my fiance and will be back this summer. Hopefully he'll have his interview while I'm there and will come back with me! Have you been recently?

Bonjour

Good luck on your journey I am sure that you will hear a response soon! I love Haiti but I have a pretty high profile family there and I;m sure you remember when the kidnappings were going and was barred from entering the country for my safety. I couldn't' even go to my grandfathers funeral 2 years ago! Although the situation has calmed down now I haven't traveled back to visit because I am now married and he is in Jamaica so I have concentrated on him and my family there. I wish to travel back to Haiti with my Husband so he can meet that side of the family but have no idea when that will be. I do miss home very much but I rather be safe then sorry you feel me!

So how was it when you went , still hot as can be I imagine. I never forget the hot sun I have been the darkest I have ever been in my life during my stays in Mariani LOL

Juleali,

I also wanted to mention that Haitian weddings and most ceremonial activities are also influenced a persons religious beliefs. So depending on your SO's denomination that could impact the style of your wedding. Feel free to PM me

Bonswa Phillyfashionista,

It is definitely better to be safe than sorry with things being so unpredictable/unstable there. But, you know what they say about the soil touching your feet, you'll always be back. It was hot while I was there, but anything is hot compared to VT in February! I hope things move quickly for you and your Husband, and that one day soon you will be able to visit your family in Haiti once more. Thanks for all of your help and advice, it's been very helpful.

We're set for 10 years!!

Timeline

I can offer no ideas into traditional Haitian weddings -sorry!- but I thought I would share my ideas anyway about a bicultural wedding.

I'm getting married here in Brazil in about a month (I'm American and my fiance is Brazilian). We are having our wedding in his church. I speak Portuguese quite well, but I am not yet completely fluent. We thought that it would be nice to have our ceremony conducted in both of our native languages so that we can both get the full benefit! Even though I understand Portuguese, I thought it would be strange taking my vows in a language that I can barely understand, at times! So, he has a cousin here who lived in the USA for 18 years (since she was 4!). We have spoken to the pastor and he and this cousin are going to get together before the ceremony and he is going to roughly tell her what he is going to talk about during the ceremony. Then, she will translate. Like the pastor will say a sentence or two and she will translate. I especially wanted this because my parents are not going to be able to come for the wedding (we have no money!), so the wedding will be recorded. My parents speak no Portuguese at all, so this way they will be able to understand the whole ceremony!

The same cousin also sings really really well so I'm going to find some sort of romantic wedding-y song that has been translated into both Portuguese and English. She'll sing the first half of the song in Portuguese and the second half in English to help incorporate both of our cultures. Beyond that, most of the Brazilian wedding traditions are pretty much the same as we do things in the US.

Good luck in planning your wedding!

I am trying to start some wedding planning while waiting for our k-1 visa. My fiance is Haitian and we would like to incorporate some Haitian traditions into our wedding ceremony/reception. I would love some ideas and to hear how other brides incorporated aspects of their SO's culture and traditions into their ceremony/receptions.

Thanks!

I am Haitian and my husband is too.. you could have the ceremony in Creole and English or French English...that will make a little special .

Good luck on your journey....
