My Fiance and Son have arrived in the U.S. (Philippines K-1 K-2) Should we get the social security card for them now or wait till after marriage? Not sure what to do since we will have to go change her name after marriage on the social security card. We have not filed for AOS yet. Just begining all of this and hoping to do things right. I would apply for the K-1's SSN now. K-2 cannot be assigned a work authorized SSN without an EAD card or after the AOS is approved and an I-551 stamp or card is issued. In the meantime, I would aply to the IRS for an ITIN if you neeed to number to claim the child on your taxes.

Agreed. Apply for the SSN now rather than later. It seems to be easier to get the card in a maiden name and go back later to change it to a married name than to get it in a married name before USCIS has changed the name. It can be done but it appears to be a lot of hassle since a lot of the SSA employees are unfamiliar with their own policies and procedures.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
