Travel Question

Hi I have a quick question. My husband and I are planning on taking a trip to England in May. My passport is still in my maiden name. What name do I get my ticket under? My maiden or married name? The maiden name will match my passport, the married name will match my green card. I know that I need to take my marriage license to show the name change for getting through immigration but what about the ticket itself?Has anyone ever had any problems at immigration with having a different name on their passport to their green card?

Thank you for your time

Kirsty

I did this recently. Buy your ticket in your maiden name and you will be fine. When you get back to the US you'll need to show Immigration your marriage certificate explaining the name change. I took a photocopy of my marriage certificate and they weren't too happy about that at PHL, they wanted the original. They let me in but told me to use the original in future. Just so you know. :)

what about this scenario:

my jamie has always booked his travel under the name he uses in everyday life (jamie Y) instead of the name that is in his passport (and now subsequently on the visa-related documents). does he need to book his ticket under that official name (jamie Y X)?

i guess the answer is book under the full/official name. right?

It's whatever's on the passport. If it's Jamie Y, he books under Jamie Y.

My passport is in a former name, but it still has another 5 years on it so I will be Maven T instead of Maven T-M on international flights until 2014. On domestic flights, it's another ball game because I can use my DL, which is in my new last name.

I believe that made sense!

You could always get a new passport. You don't have to wait for it to expire.

I know, but it seems a waste of money when I still have 5 good years on the thing! Plus, I have no moral objections to being one name for foreign flights and my "real" name for every other situation where I need to show ID. But for people who find it more troublesome, this is a good solution.

What is it 90 GB pounds to get a new one? Do they charge if its for a name change reason? 10 years divided by 90 = 9gbp a year. Its not that expensive.

Ah, but I have a US passport and name changes are not done for free unless it's done within the first year of name change. I've been married for over 2 years so unless I pony up $75 no new passport. Yes, $15 a year is peanuts but it's money I don't really need to spend.

I suppose it's really down to how important you think having all your documents in the same name are, and for USC's this is less of an issue in America. My last name is really something I don't think about too much -- it's mostly there for other people to identify me, not for me to identify myself to myself. (To me, I'm always the Maven :P .) I'd be perfectly happy changing it again and it would have no bearing on how I define myself. I know this is certainly not the case for everyone, and I myself was happy to shrug off my maiden name (without getting into matters, it had the potential to hold me back).

I guess it's whatever works for you!
