For some reason I'm not worrying too much at the AOS stage, but during the K1 part I would wake up at 3 am every morning worrying that something was going to go wrong. It drove me crazy and my doctor prescribed Ambien which I took for about 5 nights in a row and then took once or twice a week after that because I was afraid I'd become dependent on it if I took it more often.

I found it WONDERFUL. I actually woke up feeling rested (I'd forgotten what that felt like), but as someone else said, you do have to take it just before you want to fall asleep because it works in about 10 minutes. I once took it, got up to go to the bathroom and was almost falling over on the way back to bed.

I think if you're responsible about its use, you'll be fine. And even one decent night's sleep a week can make a difference!

if you've only been given a short course prescription, then take them and then your body will again get used to sleeping regularly. Once you've had a couple or 3 nights good sleep, you can probably stop taking them.

I wish I had that option, I haven't slept well in over a month.

Not wishing to scare you, but my sister-in-laws husband had real troubles with Ambien. He would sleep-walk with it, and once ate a whole pound of cheese in his sleep, with no memory of it at all. I've also heard of people cooking a whole meal, and eating it, in their sleep when on ambien. But if you only have a short course of it then you'll probably be okay, is my guess.

But I would strongly suggest you look into other people's suggestions here as to long term methods of helping you sleep.

This is 100% true.

Melissa, be very careful with Ambien. My mother got addicted to it when I moved to Scotland. :( I still sometimes feel like it was my fault. She would sleep-walk, have hour long conversations with me where nothing she said made sense, and she never remembered it in the morning. When she finally did get to sleep (real sleep, not talk, eat, awake-sleep), she was literally knocked out. I mean, one time there was a raccoon eating out of our trash outside and I thought someone was breaking into the house. I screamed at her and shook her for like 20 mins before giving up. She simply couldn't wake up. It was awful.

She stopped taking them about 2 months ago, and while she has a little trouble sleeping here and there, it's much better than what she was like while taking the pills.

This is off-topic here, but there's a book I'm dealing with at work that tells the story of this Italian family who have a hereditary neurological disorder - its in a similar vein to BSE (Mad Cow Disease) but apparently it permanently stops the victims from being able to sleep.

Like BSE its ultimately fatal - as the body's metabolism runs out of control and eventually shuts down (as the physical need for sleep is still there - regardless of the victims ability to do it)

Weird eh?

Do you find that it's more difficult to sleep the other nights of the week? My main concern is, because I am normally a really easy sleeper (asleep in 5-10 minutes) that taking medicine will interfere with that once I'm out of this phase. Although I've pretty much decided that I'll be taking it tonight because I cannot go one more day without sleep. I just hope it works. And that I can get up in the morning.

I don't take it more than 2 nights in a row. Any more than that and it will affect me when I'm not taking it.

When I can't sleep, I take a drug called Phenergan. It helps me with the nausea that sometimes accompanies my migraines and makes me really sleepy. It's not habit forming.

I also keep a pad/pen on my night table... sometimes things I think of to remember in the morning will keep me from sleeping well. If I write them down, I can rest easier.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.

Warm bath, and/or warm milk (with a bit of honey) will help ease you into sleep. If you do need to take something, take something lighter than ambien. If you don't have kids, and you have a full 8-9 hours to devote to sleep, it's a great aid.

My "horror story" with ambien, the one and only time I used it, it knocked me out. I mean knocked me OUT in 5 minutes. I woke up to a flooded bathroom because my daughter had climbed over her baby gate and turned on the sink. Not too bad cleaning up water on vinyl tile, but it could have been a lot worse. My daughter could have gotten hurt or been in trouble, and I'd have been completely out for the entire time. It scared me enough to never take it again.

There are plenty of natural remedies out there to try. Melatonin as mentioned, and passiflora or avena sativa. It scares me how many people will willingly take prescription drugs and never consider something natural

I concur with the previous suggestions of a glass of wine or milk...both work for me when I've needed help getting to sleep. (although not at the same time *ick*!)

My Fiancee occasionally has sleeping problems, so I'll ask her if she has any suggestions when we chat later.

Last night was my first experience with Ambien. I started getting those physical aspects of anxiety-heart racing, etc. right before I took it. Then after I did take it, nothing happened. Seriously, for like 20 minutes it was as if I had taken nothing. Then, at some point, I feel asleep. It all seemed very natural and not like I had been knocked out. I woke up this morning feeling much better. Hopefully this will help me get back on track naturally-as I have already mentioned I'm not a huge fan of messing with my body a whole lot. If I had more time I might have considered some of the more natural remedies, but the main problem was I had no chance to discuss those things with my doctor and how they may interact with the medicine I'm already on. Also, my insomnia to me doesn't seem "typical"-in that, I'm not laying awake thinking on 5,000 subjects. It was like there was an invisible barrier between me and sleep, because all the other conditions were ideal.

Don't let the sunshine spoil your rain...just stand up and COMPLAIN!
