So my wife and I were about to put the finishing touches on her application when I started to quiz her on her knowledge of US history and civics. Let's just say she needs to study up a bit.

I'm not sure whether to let her file and hope that the motivation of having an interview within five months will motivate her to learn the stuff on her own (I majored in political science and minored in history - so I can tutor her), or insist that she completes a citizenship class of some kind before we send her application in.

Any thoughts?

Apply now - the 100 or so questions she could be asked are listed on the USCIS website, in all honesty, she doesn't need to have any depth of knowledge, just, drilling in these 100 questions should successfully get her through her civics test.

If she answer 6 questions correctly out of 10 she will pass the test. Just print the 100 questions posted at the website of USCIS for her.

I had the flashcards and they were the best way for me to study. I could mix them up and I could put them in different piles and so on. They worked great. If you have a basic knowledge of American history, politics and geography, you don't have to study too much. There were only a few answers I actually had to memorize. It's fairly easy to do. I think taking a class is a great idea if you have problems with the English language. Just to practice it, especially in context with the interview and all the key words used there.

My wife has been using the flashcards and sometimes bats 100% - her English is weak but she is taking English communication classes (she is also taking citizenship classes) - none of these is expensive - the flashcards were $13; the citizenship classes are $60 (one time fee - good till you pass your test); the English classes are $80 per month. So, my suggestion - have her do as much as she can - every little bit helps. And from not understanding the question at first to being able to answer all answers to the questions - was done in about 2 months by my wife. Now it seems that the citizenship interview is too far - she wishes it was today. Good Luck

No need to enroll in a class. You can go to this site to study online http://www.passcitizenshipexam.com/

What is good about that site is, you can choose to set the questions in random order, you can play the question and the answer for you to hear them on your speaker (it is a good practice to hear how words are pronounced) or you can click on the flashcards if you want to just read the questions.

Both the old and the new tests are there. The English exam is also available on this site. If you click on an item, the sentence will be played and you can practice writing these sentences on the spaces provided and click on the HINT box to see if you got it correctly.

I just read the booklet couple of times. Most of the questions are general knowledge, a couple require memorization.

I ordered the flash card and studied it. Was very helpful as I could trim out those questions that I already knew by heart and just focused on those that I need to keep reviewing.

Also, during the fingerprinting, the ASC gave out a study CD. Played that on the drive to and from work to help with the studying.

Don't assume that she has five months to learn the answers. As you can see in my timeline, my wife's interview was scheduled only three months after we mailed our application.

I agree with the others, however, that if she hasn't got too much difficulty with English, the questions should be easy to learn.

05 07 05 .... Filed 129F with Nebraska Service Center

12 05 05 .... Successful interview -- visa granted

12 24 05 .... Married!

06 22 09 .... Irina takes the Oath and becomes a US Citizen
