You keep wanting to argue over semantics, Charles. Here's a summary of what the AWB proposes: (which part do you take issue with?)

Assault Weapons Ban Reauthorization Act of 2008 - Amends the federal criminal code to reinstate, for 10 years, the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act's assault weapons ban to prohibit the manufacture, transfer, or possession of a semiautomatic assault weapon or a large capacity ammunition feeding device. Specifies models and features of banned weapons.

Sets forth exceptions to such ban, including: (1) firearms or devices lawfully possessed under federal law on the date of enactment of this Act; (2) certain firearms, replicas, or duplicates listed in an appendix as they were manufactured on October 1, 1993; (3) any firearm that is manually operated by bolt, pump, lever, or slide action and that has been rendered permanently inoperable or that is an antique firearm; (4) any semiautomatic rifle that cannot accept a detachable magazine that holds more than five rounds of ammunition; (5) any semiautomatic shotgun that cannot hold more than five rounds in a fixed or detachable magazine; and (6) firearms manufactured for, transferred to, or possessed by a federal, state, or local government agency or for law enforcement.Requires the serial number of any weapon or device manufactured after enactment of this Act to clearly show the date of manufacture.

Directs the Attorney General to study and report to Congress on the effects of this Act on violent and drug trafficking crime.

According to what you have posted, the top rifle would be banned, but not the bottom one. Both can use detatchable magazines. The top one is semi-automatic, and the bottom one is bolt action.

Bill, you can read the full text of the AWB to see specifically, which weapons are banned. Look, there is no such thing as a perfectly written bill. If you believe this bill could be improved, then articulate where and how, but to simply dismiss the notion that we can't reasonably establish guidelines for what weapons should be off the streets and which ones should be legal is ignoring common sense.

There in lies the problem when you write a feel good bill. The weapons you want off the street are already restricted to federal firearm license holders, i.e. automatic weapons, machine guns, grenade launchers, and flame throwers.

Bill, read this again...

Can't read English, huh?

I'd further add, Bill - why would a hunter need a semi-automatic over bolt action?

Squirrels are quick little blighters. They need to level the playing field.

Personally, I prefer a bolt action for hunting (one shot, one kill). When target shooting and engaging multiple targets, then a reliable semi-auto is the way to go. But I have seen some folks fire a single action revolver faster than a semi-automatic pistol.

Not many of those in circulation on the streets I would assume. :P

russia has been known to sell about anything with tracks on the arms market.

I suppose that we could expect Russia to become involved then with supplying these big boys to Mexico's cartels once we clamp shut the production pipeline here in the states? Now you're on to something!

i fully expect that russia and other countries will step up to fill orders should this train wreck occur.

What is so funny, or maybe not, are the people quoting the 2nd amendment like it was written yesterday!!! For Pete's sake, when the Bill of Rights was written, the only guns they had were black powder, single shot. Not friggen fully automatic rifles!!!

People need to wake up and stop taking a document written over 200 years ago so literally, and as if it still applies to today's standards. That's why we have a Supreme Court.

Seriously, arguing with some of these people is like talking to a brick wall. All I hear is Waa Waa Waa… Waa Wa Wa Waa!!!

Let's keep the past separate from the present. Jeesh!!!

like you are exercising your freedom of speech ... like the internet was available 200 years go. Context .... got a brain? Use it.

Oh like the two even compare? That is so lame! You should take your own advice and try using your brain.

I know it's beyond you ... the internet is so 1700's ... Since the correlation is lost .. well guess you need help:

Or many other countries. China has become a huge arms seller and actually makes pretty good knock offs. One of my fave handguns is made in the Czech republic and they will have no qualms selling to anyone.

1st, 2nd, 4th amendments specifically grant rights to the people in case you haven't read the Constitution. All were written as you stated over 200 years ago. technology changed since then in case you haven't noticed and all the original amendments are thus impacted. The document was crafted very well to anticipate these changes.

Your cavalier approach to the rights listed in the doc speaks volumes in regards to your beliefs. Glad to see you can interpret the 1st 10 amendments individually to your way of thinking and not as a whole in the context for which they created.

You're projecting - a straw man.

The whole reason why I started this thread was a response to the long standing argument made by the gun lobby that an AWB only keeps these military type weapons out of the hands of law abiding citizens and not the criminals...which is a false argument. It's the so-called 'law abiding' citizen with an affinity for assault weapons that are the ones who snap and go on killing rampages. Random acts of violence are what I'm most concerned about, however, the AWB did keep such weapons off the street when it was in place from 1994-2004.
