Saturday night we were over at a friend's house for movie night and they had some otehr friends over who we hadn't met. somehow during the course of conversation, it came up that I was Canadian - the husband of the couple said 'You're Cdn eh? I'm so sorry'

Uhm - excuse me? What a jerkface...I mean what kind of thing is that to say to someone you've just met? I just said 'No need to be sorry at all' and then I was done talking to him.

Just stupid

What matters in that statement is how he said it. I'd take that as a hehe, poke poke kind of joke, not something serious to be offended about.

In the absense of some sort of sports reference, I don't see any good hearted jab.

*shrug* I don't get offended and I don't really care if anyone feels "sorry", joking or not, about my nationality.

Yes - unfortunately there was nothing nice about it I don't think...considering we'd never met before.

I personally am now much more consious of the stupid things Cdns say to Americans now too, and I correct them when they are retarded....my dad's friends probably said 'Yer Amuuurican, are you?' in their best John Wayne accents to my husband as if it was the most clever thing they'd said all day I don't know how many times.......it bugged my husband sometimes too.....

Wiz(USC) and Udella(Cdn & USC!)

Aww I would have played!

The come backs would have been ENDLESS!

And yea what a jerk.

I think that was the first thing my wife's grandmother said to me (substitute America for Canada though).

I have had people say that to me when I tell them I live in NJ.

Go ahead and feel that way, there are great things about NJ, it's my choice to live here and I am not sorry at all.

People like that really do come a dime a dozen.

Donne moi une poptart!

I think i've said that to someone from NJ

I say that to friends who live in the valley here in L.A., but I only say it to people I know and are familiar with my brash sense of humor.

I live in Montreal, but before we got engaged and decided I would move to the US, my SO and I had talked about moving to Vancouver or somewhere else in BC.

Matt came to visit for a week last summer, and he had been here for about 2 days when his brother started chatting on facebook and I saw him ask if we had gone to check out houses in BC yet!! my future brother-in-law...

I think this thread needs a bump!

So, today, I was talking to a customer in the shop. The guy says, "oh you're the Canadian!" and I say yes, so we started talking a little bit about Canada, mostly stupid things like the weather. Then he says to me, "well, I think most Canadians just want to be American and have Canada become part of the US." Wow. No you didn't! I just stood there staring at him. I can't exactly b*tch out a customer. So, I calmly said, "well no, Canadians are actually fairly patriotic and proud of their country." He just said, "huh" and changed the subject.

Wow! That guy had some serious nuts!

When my fiance and I went down to visit his family in August, we met a friend of his mom's who said to us, "I just love Canada, I wish America would just take over it!" Both my fiance and I were seriously dumbfounded ... we just kind of laughed nervously and then left. Sooo awkward.
