Your arguments are circular and you are proposing that we give up another of our constitutionally given basic rights and freedoms.

You can't build your own nuclear bomb. There are restrictions on explosive devices. The larger question is where do you draw the line between protecting citizens and personal liberties? If you believe the 1st Amendment is absolute, then any weapon should be legal...any. If you agree that some weapons should be illegal - then what is your criteria?

Your wrong.

You can build your own nuclear bomb with the technology available today. Any good machinist, lens maker, and some good CNC equipment, can make a workable device.

Right now the limiting factor is the nuclear material to make it go boom. Why do you think the NRC cracks down on rouge nuke reactors around the world?

Again, you are comparing nuclear devices to "assault" weapons/guns. They are not in the same class - not one bit.

Restrictions on explosive devices? If your talking about C-4/Simtex, then yes, it is hard to get. But as I pointed out in my other post, you can easily make your own explosives in you garage if your so minded.

Most weapons require permits, or special license to have. There is a line drawn by the government on how big your "civilian" weapons can be. Personal weapons are just that, personal. (nukes, as you like to use, are not)

But, again, if your a criminal, do you think a "law" would stop you from having something your not suppose to have?

I have access to small amounts of NRC-controlled isotopes. I-125. Want some?

Oh right... its gamma spread doesn't go beyond a few feet. Darn.

Making a homemade nuke. A bit too movie-ish there. Sorry.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

You can't build a nuclear bomb legally. You can't cultivate Anthrax. There are lot of things that we have laws against. My question to you and anyone here who opposes banning assault weapons that serve no function whatsoever for ordinary citizens, where do you draw the line as to what someone can or can't possess legally in terms of weaponry? Because it seems all too often, the position is always opposition to any regulations. Show me some middle ground.

and this ban removed how many from circulation?

and how many more firearms were manufactured with the same operational mechanical features during this "ban"?

maybe for once you'll answer a question ... doubt it ... yet there is always hope ....

Wouldn't a better question be, how many people who went off the deep end and decided to take revenge on society didn't have access to assault weapons which could have given them the chance to kill many more people?

true to form ... you have no answer. geez

guess diesel and fertilizer will be next to ban ....

Already under control of sorts. ;)

Buy amounts needed to make high-power explosives and well... expect a knock on the ole door.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

really? ... who needs to buy all at once? don't you have a garden ... yard? diesel can be obtained at many gas stations.

I know chemistry is in your background ... so can you dream of something lethal using normal household products?

I meant fertilizer. Maybe the VJ Farmers can chime in on that one. I was under the impression that real farmers have standing accounts for purchase at reputable dealers while small-time gardening doesn't require explosives-level amounts of fertilizer. One bag of fertilizer isn't much in terms of making a massive bomb. Sure... you got high school kids making pipe bombs and things like that... but really- imagine the Disciples and the Nattynation throwing pipe-bombs at each other across the street in gang-warfare.

Mighty dangerous times! :o

As for household products sure... lock yourself in a bathroom and mix every cleaning product you can find... that can be pretty deadly. Takes a bit, too.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

now lets not get personal ... k?

the most famous ANFO at OKC OK wasn't gangs ... and a dedicated person doesn't need lots to cause damage. just a proper place and time. same with other chemicals that are in the civilian market.

I don't wish harm unto anyone... not even the ones that *might* deserve to suffer for being complete a$$holes.

As for causing the kinds of damage seen from Ammonium Nitrate-FO bombs to places like the most famous Federal Building in OKC... you're talking about a rental truck full now. Major difference from a 25lb, low NH4NO3-content garden variety bag you pick up every now and then. Plus... if you check the explosives testimony from that trial you'd remember the very high possibility of there being a need for additional explosive devices.

Anyway... that's life (and death) when you have a nutjob with access to mass amounts of farm gear that is now monitored a little bit more closely. As a result you don't get very many huge explosions on US soil, thankfully.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

unfortunately all it needs is a backpack or other small container with the right mixture inside to be placed in a congested area to hurt 10-20 people.

now if someone wants to self destruct in the middle of a field where only that person is impacted ... well

So be it. Like I said... small amounts are very difficult to regulate and shouldn't be. Just like with most handguns.

Off I go.

Ah, you cite legalities.

Yes, there are all ready laws on the books for owning weapons. Why do you need even more, that really do not stop someone from getting them?

I think the effort should be made to enforce the existing laws now, and go directly to the manufactures to change the way weapons work. *ala smart guns*

2/3rs of VJers don't want to see a return of the AW ban!!

VJers! This same group of people voted Obama in poll after poll a few months ago.

No wonder Obama doesn't take gun control serously.

The demographics....most polls I've done in the past had an overwhelming majority of female respondents. Look at the number of USC Males who've responded. I'll have to advertise this poll better.
