Hi everyone,

i am currently a GC holder. I applied as an aslyee back in 2005 and got my GC in Feb 2006. So, its been 3 years as a GC. I have not been to my country for more than 6 years. Infact i have never been out of US since i came here.

I am planning to be a US citizen and after i get my citizenship can i travel to my country. And since i was an asylee before and so, even if i get my citizenship i still won't be able to travel to my country.

Or after i get my citizenship it really doesnot matter where i travel even my native country.

I dont want to travel to my country right now cause the US government won't help me if something happens to me but as a citizen i get protecting. So, i am just waiting to be a citizen and then go visit my relatives.

right now you cannot go back to your country , but upon obtaining citizenship you can travel, what my uncle did is visit the neighboring country and meet up with his family there but yeah no problem after citizensship, before you may even lose your gc

As I understand it - if you retain citizenship in your home country, if you have any "legal" problems when you are travelling there- the US embassy will not help you, they do not "override a country with it own citizens in that country" - even though you have US citizenship. I do not have any links etc to the laws that back this up, it is just what I remember reading, and something you may want to investigate further if it is appropriate to your situation.
