This is just real quick. We submitted our DS-230 on March 15 and today my husband called the NVC for an update and they said we got an RFE for Question No. 20 on DS-230 which is asking the list of my residence since I was 16. I was born Jan. 1983 and been living in one place since I was a baby. But since they are asking me of my residence SINCE i was 16 so I wrote on the First line From/To : 01/1999 (didnt write anything for To) I filled this form online so I cannot use letters on the date fields so I place the word "Present" instead on the Address field of the form. Then i typed on the 2nd line "Nothing follows"

We are wondering what was my mistake there. Can anyone help me please? Thank you.

on our ds-230 ,we put the actual date of the signing on the form...some get RFE for that, while some hand wrote "present" in the box which have triggered RFE's as well...i was reading posts about a NEW DS-230 form that is now out ,that addresses that particular problem (you can now use adobe to type in "PRESENT")...look on the USCIS site and see if that is available, and use that one to send in...DONT wait for the hardcopy of the RFE, that will take forever, print out another barcode from the original DS-230 and send that in with the updated version of your signed and completed DS-230....good luck

Just a note:

The older versions of the DS-230 didn't allow you to type "PRESENT". But the new version does. I guess someone mentioned it in the middle of this thread. Im just adding to it.

yeah they need the originals and translations too.

check out this link.

http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/info/info_3195.html

thanks for your answer and also the link, but today I called the US Embassy in Hungary and they told me that I dont need to send those police certificates and birth cert. with the DS 230, only the Embassy will need these stuffs in the interview.. so now I really dont know what I should attach to the DS 230 to the NVC..

My husband called the NVC today to clarify about the RFE. You're right guys, it was the missing word "Present" that caused delay to our papers. I was thinking, if we can hand write the word present...why can't they just do it for us...it won't make any difference since my signature is there already. The reason why i didnt handwrite the PRESENT co'z it would make the document look forged or something...unless i filled the form all in hand written. I don't know, it just dont make sense. Now you can finally write the word PRESENT on the new form of DS-230 on their website. It seems like we're paying for their own mistake.

Well anyway, enough whining hehe...I already sent out the new filled forms today and it would take 12 days to get to my husband. (sigh) I hope i made it right this time. So to all of you who are going to do their DS-230 Q. No. 20 DO NOT FORGET TO WRITE "PRESENT":bonk:

Once again, thank you everyone for sharing your opinion and ideas. God bless us all.

  • 5 weeks later...

Hi Guys,

I sent my DS 230 yesterday and was feeling so happy at finally getting it together and in the mail. Came home from the Post Office and found this thread whilst browsing. Now I think I may get an RFE for question 20.

DS-230 Question 20: List below all places you have lived for at least six months since reaching the age of 16, including places in your country of nationality.

Whichever way I read this I don't understand why they would give you a RFE for not listing your town/city of residence before you reached the age of 16, as it definitely says SINCE. Surely if they wanted that, they would have asked for all places you have lived for at least 6 months since birth???? However it appears from this thread that they do as Kotana has mentioned :crying: Hence I've had a restless nights sleep worrying that I've done the wrong thing.

My DS 230 packet is still in the mail system it will arrive next week at NVC. Would you advise printing off another DS 230 form with that question re-entered to include my residence before aged 16, together with a coversheet and letter of explanation, to try and avoid a future RFE?? Or should I just wait and see what happens? This process is making my hair turn grey!!

Any advice gratefully received.

dvrjwh,

My suggestion would be to wait it out and see if you get RFE... Sending another package without RFE could confuse them and cause delay. It is quite possible that they will let this fly if you have entered all the information of your residence as of age 16 till now.

Thanks Champi for your reply. I'll take your advice. I have a feeling it could be down to the individual reviewing your case as to the interpretation of that question, so I might be lucky.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has answered this way???
