So I sent an email to the embassy in Kyiv and I just wanted to make sure they knew that I'd be attending the interview with my fiance.

They sent me this reply:

Thank you for your inquiry of March 25, 2009. Please be informed that your presence at the interview is optional and will not influence the decision of the Consular officer. Although you may accompany your fiancé to the interview you will not be able to attend it in full.

Almost sounds as if they'd rather not have me there

What parts is the American fiance/e not allowed in?

you can be in the waiting room but you are not suppose to go to the "teller" window....

Form letter, don't worry.

You can go right up to the interview window with him. If there are any questions ( a lot of times there are not any) they will be directed to Vova and he will have to answer. It is HIS interview, not yours. It's OK, better only one person speak in an interview anyway. Go have fun, you will be treated cordially I am sure. Knowing the people in Kiev, they would probably let you help him out if he had any problems. We had no questions asked and many, many people have the same experience.

Pay, it may be true you aren't "supposed to", but I did, and so did every other USC fiance there, but of course, none of us had an "interview" to speak of. Perhaps if there WERE questions they will tell you to sit in the waiting room. Really it is the same room, only a cubicle-type "privacy" screen separates the window from the room.
