Will the original docs we sent to the USCIS be returned to us at the time of interview, in addition to the original docs we sent to the NVC?

Catie

I think they do give back the original documents but what you mean exactly by the original docs that you sent to USCIS? Because I am pretty sure that they do give back birth ceritificate, marriage certificate and all those important documents.

we just received the extra copies that we sent to NVC. We didn't get anything back from the original documents we submitted to USCIS or NVC. Given that all of those documents are sitting with the CO at the time of the interview, it's just the matter of asking them how to get them. I do not know for sure.

If you want your originals back from USCIS you have to call them and request it. There 1-800 number have option that say something like "if you like us to return your original documents...." so, call them and I am sure they will return it. I will do the same once my wife gets her visa and shes here.

NVC will

USCIS typically will NOT... that is why the USCIS does not routinely ask for originals... almost all of the USCIS process can be accomplished with just regular photocopies. In the USCIS instructions it does say that if you submit an original be aware as it becomes a part of your file and won't be returned

your documents will be given not at the interview but when you make your port of entry, all documents will be sealed and given to you to present to immigration and very bold mark do not open. anyone else could add to this but thats what they normally do.

I have never heard of anyone receiving their originals back at the POE? Where on earth did you get that from Candyland?

Anyway - they are supposed to give you back the original documents at the interview (from NVC - not from USCIS) - that is all there is to it - except for the original police certificate(s) - they keep that.

my process is done after my interview the consular office gave me approval i paid dhl which is my mailing service here in jamaica, my package was delivered sealed with a big white sheet saying do not open which i think has all the documents sent to them from nvc, he specifically said to be when i ask what about my documents and he made it known to request upon my POE. so i am not sure if they will mail or you get it back at that point. if i am wrong, please clarify but that was my process.

Unless they do it completely differently from pretty much every country I have read about - then yes, he was wrong.

My Husband got back the originals at the interview.

if i remember correctly, there was not a copy machine in sight at JFK when we came through... I have no idea how or why you were told what you were told... there is not a mailed package to you after arrival and I seriously doubt the POE will do anything for you (but you can always ask).

YMMV

Sometimes they will exchange copies for your originals at the interview, otherwise you will probably never see them again. In China they took our originals at the K-3 medical exam and put them in the sealed envelope, those are gone forever, but we had extra copies for future AOS or CR-1/IR-1 interviews. We had to send these in to the NVC with the DS-230 for our IR-1 interview. They now have 2 sets of originals, we were told that we could supply a set of copies and maybe we would receive our originals back. We still have an extra set of originals just incase. I now this is not a definite answer, but we/you can only ask. Good Luck, Mike & Yizhen

The exact process is different at different Consulates/Embassies. I think it has been confusing, but the NVC asks for copies and originals. I know of several people who did not receive the originals back from the NVC, but they were Interviewed in China, It could be different elsewhere. I will ask one of these guys, his wife got her visa yesterday, I will post back. Mike & Yizhen

Hi,

USCIS never send the originals back but NVC sends your originals to the consulate when your case is transferred. Make sure you ask the interviewing officer that you want to collect your originals at that same time. Otherwise in excitement of getting the visa, you might forget and i don't know the other way to get the orginals back from the consulate..

Best of Luck in your visa journey
