I watched the opening ceremonies last night. What a show! Cirque-du-soleil meets synchronized pyrotechnics! Simply amazing.

I was trying to explain to my little brothers that in Italy, and Europe in general.... it wasn't really that far out. Things there are "different!" and shows like this are actually quite common. Of course, it was on a much grander scale, but to see people dressed in crazy costumes and speeding around with flames shooting out of their backs..... just walk down the street!

I liked the Ferrari doing doughnuts too, that was pretty cool. Who knows, maybe someday auto racing will be an olympic sport, I mean after all, if sweeping the ice real, real, real fast is a sport, why not driving cars in a circle? (Everyone in North Carolina just said YEEE HAW!!!, Everyone in Canada just said, Hey, Curling IS a real sport!)

I thought the most significant thing that happened was when the two Koreas, North and South, were introduced as one "Corea" and carried a unified flag of the whole pennisula. WOW! After living in South Korea for the better part of two years, and being there for the 50th anniversary of the armistice, this was a very important sight for me to see. Seeing this made watching the enitre ceremony worthwhile.

My little brother (7 years old) was saying "is it over yet? Can we go play now?" and so on. I tried to explain to him that normally when this many countries come together, half of them are trying to kill the other half, and the olympics are one of the only times that representitives of the whole world come together to PEACEFULLY compete. In this day and age, that is significant, and to watch the olympics for that alone is a gift.

I was impressed to see the unified Korean team, too.

Did you see the size of the Canada team? Wow

England's team came out wearing what looked like business attire. LOL ...leave it to the Brits! :P

And, the closing couldn't have been any better. Pavarotti sang Nessun Dorma so beautifully.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Some of the folks even had on cow suits.

And the women wearing the Moschino dresses that looked like the Alps.

My personal favorite though, was the "RICOLA" guys.

Most of the "African" skiers weren't really from Africa. They were dual citizens or were born in Africa but lived and trained abroad. The olympics is funny like that. Kind of like how the NHL guys all play in the US and Canada, but then go to the olympics to skate for their home country.

Did you guys happen to see the 52 y/o woman from the Virgin Islands who is the athlete for the luge? That's crazy!!! But, good for her!

One of the best winter olympics memories for me (too young to remember living through the Miracle on Ice, but have seen the replays a dozen times) is when the Jamaican bobsled team CARRIED their busted sled over the finish line. It still brings a tear to my eye every time I see the clip or think about the dedication and perserverance that those brave men showed. What heroes!
