RECENT CREDIT APPLICATION AT TARGET A BUST!!!!

So I just got back from visiting my hunny bunny... tried to get some stuff done... went to Target, expecting a very easy application process... I have no clue what the issue was, they tried setting up the application in their system at the customer service desk... as I'm sure they do for thousands of people a year (many i'm sure Canadians)... and they tell me that it is not taking my Canadian DL# and they needed my passport... then they told me it would not accept an out of state address, so I used my fiances in PA... well it came back showing 'needing further approval', so I will know in 10 days... but now I think about it... they may have totally screwed me... my app is now half Canadian and ha;f American... what if they flag me for some sort of fraudulent #######? My credit record is good....

should I try calling them? I'll be really upset if this messes it up :(

How about JC Penny etc... as a Canadian is it better for us to call in and apply in person?

Sorry, why are you applying for a Credit Card for a US store when you're a resident of Canada?

I really don't understand why a person's nationality would be factored into account when evaluating a credit application? A good credit score & good credit history is just that regardless. Oh wait, sorry, I forgot about the "Patriot Act".

You may have been turned down for the length of your credit history- ie less than two years.

What I don't understand, is that I have many Canadian friends and family, who reside in Canada, and have successfully applied and rec'd a Target card.... many many stores in the US issue credit to Canadians... it helps fuel their economy....as they know many Canadians hit Target as soon as they cross the boarder lol!

I can't understand, that when I called, they said they do take app's from Canadian residents and when I went in, they said the system would not take Canadian info?

I have had US credit at stores before.

Am I wrong, what am I missing?

Some of you recommended to apply before I move as it would be based on my Canadian credit....

what am I missing.... oie veih!

Just a suggestion but I see you are from Toronto. How about crossing over to Buffalo for a quick shopping/card application trip. I am in Niagara and know of many who have had no problems getting cards at Macy's at Walden Galleria. You might have better luck where they are familiar with Canadian shoppers. Just a thought.

I think OBX has a good idea. This is just based on the fact that i'll go shopping at the Galleria and they take my Canadian credit cards and don't bother taking a second glance... but when i go shopping in Denver when visiting my fiance they look at me like i'm from outer space and stare at the credit card for a good 10 seconds before running it... I've never tried to apply for a credit card but i'm sure Canadians do it there all the time. Sometimes target employees seem kinda dense (no offense if anyone works there!!)

I am in Toronto... and I figured by crossing the boarder and applying, that each State would be the same? I applied in PA.... I assume Buffalo would have same credit requirements from their head office....

Ahhh the joys of being an immigrant.... I truly have a new appreciation for all the immigrants in Canada

You will soon find there is NO "United" in the States!! DMV's regulations differ from state to state. Lot of differences!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Call this number and find out what happened.

When I first applied for the Target Card I was using my Canadian info. I had already been approved in store for a Macy's and JCPenny. Target was a little more difficult. Because my address on my Canadian Equifax was messed up, they wanted me to fax them proof.

I did and was sent a Target Visa.

So, CALL THEM! Don't let them bully you, talk to them until you get the info you need, and if you need to ask to speak to a supervisor. This is what happened to me.

So Call this number:

Sounds like the person you were dealing with maybe just isn't familiar with the procedure?

I don't know about applying for a Penney's card online or on the phone (from Canada) - I do know that if you show up at the store with your SIN they are happy to give you one.

Is it bad to apply for too many at once? I was worried... I will apply in person for a Macy's and JC P in April when I go down....

And I will call Target....

Thanks guys.... this is really helping! I hate having to take my fiance's credit card everytime I head out the door... i've always been so independant.... makes me feel weird  well, except of course if i'm headed to the salon lol! :innocent:

I got a letter in the mail from Target Visa today saying they are lowering my credit limit (probably because I just recently took a chunk out of my Canadian line of credit and then had a 2 day late payment on the card—my first ever, I forgot!). It is still under my Canadian SIN. I think they are just being a LOT less cavalier about it than they used to be. So I bet you you will still get one—they just aren't approving on the spot as much as they used to.

So, CALL THEM! Don't let them bully you

I don't think Target is bullying poprocks because they were unsure of the process. I didn't even know it was possible to get a US credit card without being a resident, so I'm not surprised they might not.

Just give them the info they are requesting. If you are denied, you're denied. There is nothing you can do about it.

And yes, applying for too many credit cards at once can lower your credit score and make you look suspicious, so just be careful.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

I wasn't implying that Target was bulling poprocks. I was just saying Don't let them bully you. When I had to call the person I was talking to didn't seem to know what she was talking about or how to deal with my situation. She basically wanted to get me off the phone. I refused to give in and asked for a supervisor, who was able to tell me information that the initial customer service rep couldn't.

Don't give in just because they don't know how to help you. Do what you need to do to get the information you need, and if it means you find out you were denied, then so be it.

If you apply for 2-3 cards, they aren't going to think anything of it. I've seen and heard of people going on credit app sprees where they apply for 5 - 10 cards in a day! Sure it hurt them, but eventually scores will go back up. And plus, the three you are looking at are going to be looking at your Canadian credit report...just don't apply for anything new up in Canada. And when you move down here, get your SSN and transfer the accounts to your US credit reports, you'll have no US Inquiries and 3 good Tradelines to start you on your credit building :)
