I've explored both sides, but I'm really not willing to talk about it online. I will say that I hold no ill will towards them and that their capacity to forgive and forget is greater than most.

She's from the Mekong Delta, which is in the South.

Fair enough. The War 'Remnanats' Museum in Ho Chi Minh City is pretty harsh (renamed from the the War Crimes Museum) and a difficult place to visit for anyone. As are the Cu Chi Tunnels. The Mekong is a lovely part of Viet Nam. While I agree about the capacity to forgive, the next generation are in the ascendency in Viet Nam and the majority of the population grew up after the war.

Any hoo..back to movies.

Try these:

Wanted

Daredevil

Gigli

Titanic

Rescue Dawn

Movies that will allow you to appreciate the finer points of Police Academy 4 and its fine plot and acting.

My poor Wife is "Theatrically Challenged". Her idea of a great movie is Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol. I found this movie painful to watch, though Bobcat did have a few good scenes. I felt sorry for David Spade, thinking that he may actually regret making this movie. That was until I read on IMDB that there was a rumored Police Academy 8 in the works, starring none other than the aforementioned Spade AND Steve Guttenberg.

I'm starting with E.T. the Extra Testicle. What should I add to the list?

Guttenberg? He's still alive?

I think he tried a comeback a serious actor a few years ago. I saw him in a bad TV action movie a few years ago - where he was doing his best GI Joe / Stone Cold Killer impression.

On the plus side - his career is slightly fresher than Chevy Chase's.

I keep waiting for Vacation 5: The Griswolds in Tibet - now that would be hilarious, especially if cousin Eddie came along.

Funny you should mention that. The Markie Mark version was on the other night. She had to listen to me complain about how it was not as good as the original.

Thanks for the suggestions everybody.

 Yeah not that Tim Burton / Mark Wahlberg chit. About the only thing good about that was the ape costumes.

I like the opening of the original - where they establish all of those characters and half an hour later they're all dead (except for Heston).

Charlton Heston has some great rants in that too:

"You cut up his brain, you bloody baboon!"

Just let her watch the original Pink Panther series, it's goofy but still funny.

On a more serious note, some good but not too serious movies for me are:

The Kind of California

Sideways

Little Miss Sunshine (A lot better than I thought it would be)

Charlie Wilson's War

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

Smoke - although that's one of those movies you either like or hate.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

My favourite movie opening is one that contains no dialogue for the first 20 minutes. 2001: A Space Odyssey. Ahhh evolution, it's created some good 'debates' on VJ.

I watch the Pink Panther films again a couple of years ago - to tell the truth they're not as funny as I remember. The only one I thought was genuinely hilarious was The Pink Panther Strikes Again.

I also really like the original Time Machine. That never seems to get old.

I'm not a great fan of Stanley Kubrick - I find his movies clinical and detached.

Still not sure what I think about 2001 - its either a work of genius or overly pretentious guff. There's no denying of course the visionary effects work (and they showed the moon landing 2 years before we did it for real).

I forgot about Jurassic Park. I think I was 8ish when that movie came out and still watch it on tv every time it comes on.

Beauty and the Beast. First animated film to be nominated for best picture!

Wall-e

Finding Nemo

Toy Story

Shrek

Sheep: Baa-ram-ewe, baa-ram-ewe. To your breed, your fleece, your clan be true. Sheep be true. Baa-ram-ewe.

I love Kubrick. I don't like the ending to 2001 but the rest is fantastic. For me his best movie is Full Metal Jacket...awsome movie.

Btw...Kubrick shot the actual moon landing too ;)

Only part of FMJ I thought was effective was the boot camp. The rest I didn't much care for.

As far as war films go - I caught Jarhead on TV recently and thought that was interesting. A lot of serious war films have the same theme - dehumanising aspects of armed conflict. Jarhead had that too but what I thought was interesting was that the characters in it were totally detached from the conflict - basically follows an army unit around Iraq who see a lot of horrible things but don't get actually to participate in the action. Everyone is alienated from themselves as well as from what's going on.

well, if it were up 2 me, i'd add jaws, but since were dealing w/v.j. and the "typical" group of members, then mix in, joe vs. the volcano, & fraky friday! :bonk::lol:

If it were up to me I'd add all of Michael Caine's classics:

Jaws: The Revenge

The Swarm

The Hand

The Island (198)
