Passport Renewal

We just received our NOA2 and if everything goes well I would hope to have my K-1 interview in Vancouver by the end of May. I have a question about my passport though. We plan to get married this October 2009 and I would not be entering the US until late September 2009. Therefore filing AOS by end of October or early November. My passport is set to expire in June 2010, I would rather not have to do a renewal process while on my conditional GC or still waiting for AOS interview. Can I apply to renew my passport with 1 year and 1-2 months still left to go on the passport?

My parents just applied for their passports a few months back and received their passport within 2 weeks, I hope a renewal process would be that fast, but I am worried because of the new passport law going into effect June 1st.

If anyone has any insight or experience it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

My passport expires in June of this year. Given that everyone needs one by June 1st, I applied now rather than leave it to the last minute. I think a year is WAY too early. Right now the wait times according to the gov't. is 1 month for Canadians applying while in the US. I think you're way too early. I would think that you'd need to have a very good reason for them to give you a new one now. It's not a renewal btw, there is no such thing. It's just a new one. You would also want to wait until you got into the US because your visa is going to be in your passport.

I just renewed my passport last month and it says this in the instructions:

"2. If your current passport expires more than 12 months from the date you submit your application, provide a written explanation for why you are applying at this time. Should Passport Canada not be satisfied that you have a valid reason for applying early, your application for a new passport may be refused."

So you might want to keep that in mind! I think its a little too early to apply as well. Its not difficult to apply via mail from the US later.

What if someone lost it? Would they not issue a new Passport good for 5 years?

I went in person to renew my Cdn passport just as we were starting the CR-1 process, and it had over a yr left on it. The passport dude asked why I wanted to renew it so early, i stated I was in the process of obtaining a visa to move to the USA, which takes awhile to do, and upon completion I wanted to ensure my passport was relatively new, and he had no probs with that! Think he made me write out a statement. All worked out well

No prob! I just mailed off my cdn passport yesterday to be renewed, will be interesting to see how long it takes

Yeah I am hoping that it won't take too long either! I would really like a May interview in Vancouver but I have to wait to renew it in person until I return from Omaha the first week of April, which supposedly will take less time.

Hey Flames9 I just had a follow up question for you. I am going to be requesting a new passport next week due to wanting a new passport for the visa to be put into. Does the passport number change when you receive your new passport good for 5 years? Or does it stay the same?

Ya know, I have no clue,lol!! I was actually wondering that myself the other day! I would think it would stay the same???? As that # is the System??? I honestly don't know, I'm sure someone else will pipe up!! I have never kept any of my old passports, but I did request my old one back this time

I was thinking so too! Kind of like your SSN number which I have, since I went to school in the US. I hear that doesn't change when come in the US with K-1 and go to SSN office to update. Hmm, well I guess we will see who gets their passport back first! I guess when I go to the passport counter next week I will make sure to ask and I'll let ya know!

The passport number is definitely different. I just compared my old one with my new one... What I did, was request my old invalidated passport back when I went to renew just in case anything came up at the interview about my passport numbers being different on the original petition.
