Getting married in Las Vegas

I have a few questions, I have been looking around this website and I'm not quite clear on what needs to be done.

I'm a Canadian citizen getting married this may to my fiance, who is an American Citizen. I intend to come back and work in Canada until my spousal visa gets processed.

I'm being told by several different people that I'm doing it wrong.

One person has said that they were told that they should NOT get married and she was told to get a fiance visa for her husband because if they tried to bring him in he wouldn't be able to work right away. But I've heard that Fiance visas can take up to 13 months to process and then when we do get married I won't be able to travel back to Canada for 6 months to 1 year.

I have no problem with not being able to leave Canada while we are working on a spousal visa, but I don't like the idea of it going through and I won't be able to work for 5 years.

nonsense... on a K-1 you could receive work authorization within 90 days of your application for greencard which can occur as soon as you are able to apply after the marriage

YMMV

That helps quite a bit. My mom is not looking forward to me leaving Canada, but I keep telling her "you knew this day was coming a long time ago". The Visas have been making our heads spin a bit, and we thought with the wait time being between 6 months to 1 year, we might as well get the paperwork out of the way and have another vow renewal next year.

I'm just wondering if there is anything else I should know?

Do I have to stay in Canada while the Visa is going through?

payxibka nailed it, that is nonsence!!, what you were told. And K1 visa processing of a petition most of the time is faster then a married visa.

Read the guides on a K1, truly has great information.

New life, new adventures, and a new attitude.

the K visas are non immigrant visas which you can get authorization to work on. The CR-1/IR-1 is an immigrant visa which you can work on as soon as you get to the states. Right now the processing time for each is within 1-2 months f each other so either would be OK to get. The CR-1 has advantages over the K type. read the visa types at USCIS websit and you will have a better understanding of your options.

Additionally please note that the processing times in Canada for a K-1 and CR-1 are nearly the same at this point, due to interviews only occurring in Montreal or Vancouver. While a K-1 visa may get you into the USA 1-2 months faster, the cost of the CR-1 visa will be less in the end, and you'll be able to work right away.

It will all depend on your priorities.

And of course, please come and visit in us in the Canadian forum where there are plenty of Canadians who have completed both processes or are in the middle of the processes.

PS: we got married outside of LV in the Valley of Fire. It was pretty fab.

On a completely different note, if you choose to get married in Vegas, the Chapel of the Flowers is AMAZING. :3

Ha ha, I will google this one! I know my fiance wants to have an "Elvis" wedding, which I'm ok with. Again, my mom is not happy about that either, but hey, it's not her that's getting married, it's me ;)
