Hi,

My wife has been here almost 3 years. I think I read you can file for USC within 90 days of the 3 year mark.

My question is do you have to take a writen and reading test also along with the Civics test?

Just want to prepare my wife so when she goes in, then she can pass with flying colors.

Can I put her son on also to become a USC or can I just claim him when I adopt him?

Yogi

I had my problems, girl working at the reception desk was Asian and had to speak to her like she was a two year old. My wife, a professional medical interpreter had her share of problems as her IO was from Africa and spoke English with that bumble accent, but she was experienced in interpreting for illiterate extremely poor grammar patients.

Make sure your spouse can read aloud the N-400 form, and in particular the oath and can answer questions about the evidence you submitted. Wife was not asked to read a simple sentence in English, IO was pretty well convinced at that time, but had to print, I am a good cook. Of course all the civic questions are in English as is the entire interview.

LOL, if the tables were turned around, wife wouldn't have passed her IO in her ability to speak the English language.

It seems that your wife has been a legal resident for 3 years - she can apply for citizenship 90 days prior to her 3 years (that's the soonest she can apply).

My wife has language problems too - but she has been taking Citizenship classes at a community college (they charge her $60 and she can attend till she passes her citizenship - total just $60 not recurring); she has also found an English communication class she has joined (once a week - 2 hrs per class - $80 per month). She is able to talk and answer her civic and English questions including reading and writing pretty well. We shall see how she does in her interview. You can find out similar classes in your city (I didn't want to pay thousands in a regular college for almost the same thing.) Good Luck

The Civics test is given orally in English (there can be exceptions if the person is old enough and has been here long enough). So the Civics test is somewhat of an English test by itself.

There is also a brief English test. The interviewer will ask the alien to write a simple sentence. Something like, "The girl is wearing a blue dress." It won't be that sentence, but it will be something of approximately that level of difficulty.

My boss is from South Africa and is a native speaker of English. He recently naturalized, and his interviewing officer was from Asia, and spoke English as a second language with a fairly thick accent. My boss thought it was strange that this foreigner who spoke ESL had to test his English ability, since he was a native speaker, but she made him write a simple sentence in English.

Regarding her son, assuming he's under 18 and has a green card, he will become a citizen automatically via the child citizenship act.

USCIS CCA Info

Note that "admitted to the US as an immigrant" in the above page is equivalent to "has a green card".

There's nothing you need to do at the time of filing, but after his mother takes her citizenship oath and gets her naturalization certificate, you may want to apply for a certificate of citizenship and/or US Passport for him.
