Can platty come too? I have a special surprise for him.

AJ is no challenge of course.

You called, sweetheart?

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

Not only are police seeing more assault weapons, they also see more bad guys wearing body armor, which stops slugs from less powerful guns.

i suspect that's gonna be the next thing someone is gonna try to ban.

Perhaps you should offer your services to the police as a consultant Charles. It's quite obvious to me that you know far more about armaments and how to address these standoff situations than those stupid idiots in SWAT. It's amazing that they have survived so long without your help really.

funny how i was talking about body armor, not armaments, in that post you quoted.

The 10 assault rifles that Knight ordered for the Chaska force cost $900 a piece, including a car lock rack. Officers will carry two 30-bullet clips.

they better opt for the 30 round clips, they'll do better in a firefight.

Why on earth would a regular duty police officer need that kind of armament?

missed that one, eh? 30 bullets?

So you imagine a police officer working his beat carrying an AR-15 with him at all times?

you do live a protected life ... I can remember police at FRA carrying MP5's ... and checking out AR-15's in squad cars in New Britain CT

question ...

How many cops do you still see "walking" a beat?

I take it you don't go to concerts or other functions often? There are cops on foot everywhere. So in a situation like that, you think it would make the people attending such events safer if the cops were armed with AR-15's?

rent-a-cops? their normal everyday beat is the concert hall? wonder what they do for the days between concerts? Sorry dude ... I used to hire off duty officers. Next?

They're not always off duty. Any large crowd event - parades, protests, require cops on foot. But either way, my question still stands - do you think the public would be safer to have these cops armed with AR-15's?

Even for a patrol officer - do you envision the cop to approach a routine traffic stop holding an AR-15?

Service pistol .... AR-15 ... shotgun ... MP5 ... is there a difference in your opinion? (:secret: the answer was just given)

have you never seen a cop going up to a traffic stop with a hand on a firearm? I have many times. At that moment it does not matter one bit what the firearm is ... the LEO is ready to use.

My argument is that, as indicated in the OP, cops are having to match the firepower of what is out there, and there has been an increase in violent incidences involving assault rifles. A Federal ban on them would reduce the number assault rifles on the street, thereby making it safer for cops and the public. The gun lobby is going to ignore that fact and scare gun owners into thinking that such ban is one step closer to the Feds taking away all their guns, which is fear mongering nonsense.

a federal ban does what?!? a ban really makes a difference with things ... so (I hate to bring another topic into this) you want to legalize drugs?

do you even know what an assault rifle really is ... or do you just watch the media sound bites? please tell us what in your definition is an assault rifle.

governments taking guns away ... you really are pathetically blind to history.

The key is to keep guns out of the hands of those who are either criminals or clearly shouldn't own one due to mental reasons. The only thing I will give Cry-baby-pants some credit for is that no one should own high powered guns. Fully automatics or anything like a M16 should be banned. When it comes to murders the US has had 9,369 by means of a firearm. Australia has 59. Factor in the population difference and the US should only have 714 deaths. Keep in mind a good portion of murders are linked to domestic abuse rather than some John Wayne move taking down a bad guy. I own a few semis myself but in an ideal world (situation) no guns would be the best outcome. Unfortunately we're not at that point and I am certainly not going to give it up when you have ALCU type groups adamant on empowering criminals. The police's hands are tied by PC, procedure and red-tape. Therefore this leaves it up to us to defend ourselves.

There are a range of issues that Steven ignores. Like the fact that there is already an estimated 200,000,000 guns in circulation. Or that police cannot conduct random spot checks to see if someone is packing in public. Even a total gun ban would require at least 20 years before you saw a significant reduction in gun crimes. The thing I propose apart from banning high powered guns is a total ban on people carrying any weapons in Urban / city areas where there are people around. Everybody should mean everybody and the police should also have the right to conduct random spot checks to enforce this. With hefty fines for anyone found packing.

Of course when it comes to drugs, which actually destroy the fabric of society, good ol Stevo has no problem with that being legalized.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

a bullet is a component of a round. having 30 bullets won't do anyone any good.

having 30 rounds, on the other hand, would make a world of difference. ;)

So you imagine a police officer working his beat carrying an AR-15 with him at all times?

it happens in turkey, albeit with a larger caliber automatic rifle.

You think that would make society safer?

do you think it makes society less safe?

It's armament escalation which ultimately leaves the public more vulnerable to harm. Why stop with AR-15's? Why not equip police cars with rocket launchers, perhaps a machine gun turret? Is that the kind of society you want to live in?

sure, it's armament escalation, but when police are armed with automatic firearms, do you really think criminals are going to be so gung ho to take them on?

i think the better question, rather than those last ones you asked, are why should police be undergunned to satisfy your sense of comfort?

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

Sense of comfort? Charles, their job is to protect and serve the public. It's kind of defeating the purpose if we have police engaging in warfare on the streets. A ban on assault rifles is reasonable and proven effective.

Yes and even as a foreigner I too could probably own a high powered weapon. I am in Virginia after all. Guns are easier to get here than cigarettes. Is that not a joke?

I already own a sig, glock and F&H. Whereas in AUS even as a citizen I would be lucky if I could own an air riffle.

I think I have discussed this with Charles before. Really, what do you need a gun for outside your house. Come on... Do you think your going to pull some sort of John Wayne move. Not going to happen. The second some holds their own gun to you or your spouses head, they have got you. You try to move and your dead. That is the reality.

Plus the fact that a good portion of deaths involve kids blowing their heads off or domestic abuse. I love my guuuuuuuuns just as much as the next guy but I am not going to sit here and pretend they make society safer. Trust me, your average Aussie (redneck) would crush the yank equivalent. They're freakin convicts after all. Exiled to death where not even the queen's army could kill these bastards. Just the other day bickie gangs had a brawl with one dead at Sydney's airport. The fact still stands that gun restrictions have dramatically reduced the number of homicides there. Fully automatics and a good range of semis are banned, totally. Supply and demand. Not exactly a crop you can manufacture in your backyard or basement.

But as I also said, in this country without some major overhaul of the system / attitude/ etc I would never give up my gun. I would rather move to Australia than hand over my guns.

Sense of comfort? Charles, their job is to protect and serve the public. It's kind of defeating the purpose if we have police engaging in warfare on the streets. A ban on assault rifles is reasonable and proven effective.

While your a dh, I concur.
