DS-156 Question 17 & 18 , confusing as hell!!!

OMG these forms are never ending and confusing as hell to say the least

anyone able to provide advice on how to answer question 17 and 18 on the DS-156?

I was married years ago and divorced in 2007, so question 17 is easy enough to answer.

But then question 18 asks you for spouse's full name (Even if divorced or separated include maiden name)

What the flaming 'eck is that all about !?!?

Or does that only apply if the beneficiary is a woman ?

It is just information they want - if you were married before, check the appropriate box in #17 and list his/her name in #18 (if the person you listed had a maiden name, list it as well - in many/most cultures this would apply to a female, but not always).
