Suggestions for I-134

I only just got my NOA1 close to a month ago, but things seem to be speeding up, so I should, too!

I know there are several threads for this all relating to different situations, but I really want to know what's best for my situation ie what I should send/what I don't need to send.

I do not meet the income requirements but do have a job and go to college. My parents will definitely co-sponsor though. But, I have a few questions haha...

1. Do I only need one parent to co-sponsor or both? Is it even possible for both?

2. How do they go about calculating expenses as in number of dependents in the household?

3. How far back do we need tax returns?

4. Are letters from employers necessary? (Even for me?)

5. How important are w-2s? Especially if I'm sending tax returns... I only have mine from the past year.

6. What exactly are the bank letters supposed to be about?

  • Are they actually letters or statements?
  • Does it need to be notarized?
7. Would a home mortgage statement be needed or helpful?

Thanks in advance! I'm just really overwhelmed right now with all the different ways to go about this and all the different requirements! It hurts my head  I'll probably even think of more questions soon!

If you make above poverty

Just send these 4 items with it and you will be all set:

1. Tax returns or transcripts for 08/07/06

2. W2s for 08/07/06

3. Last 6 months of pay stubs

4. Employer letter stating position/duration/salary.

You dont need bank letters--the 134 instructions are old----majority of embassies go by the 864 standard--which is the 4 items i stated above.

Check the instructions page of the I-134 or the I-864 for calculating household size.

3. How far back do we need tax returns? Most recent tax year is required - up to most recent 3 if it will help you qualify or if they/you are self employed.

4. Are letters from employers necessary? (Even for me?) No - since they are nearly impossible to get (from many employers) it is not required.

5. How important are w-2s? Especially if I'm sending tax returns... I only have mine from the past year. W-2 is a supporting document for a tax return - you shold always submit all supporting documents for each tax return you submit - if submitting tax returns and do not have the supporting documents, you should order a IRS Tax Transcript for that year's return - this will contain the needed 'supporting' documents.

6. What exactly are the bank letters supposed to be about? You do not need a bank letter/statement unless you are using your account(s) to show evidence of an asset you are claiming on the I-134 - if you, or your co-sponsor is not using their bank account as an asset, you/they do not need this.

  • Are they actually letters or statements? Letters are difficult to secure - most will use statements
  • Does it need to be notarized? No
7. Would a home mortgage statement be needed or helpful? Needed/required? no - if income is sufficient, this information is not needed and you do not have to enter this information on the I-134. Similar to bank statement/letter.

Thanks in advance! I'm just really overwhelmed right now with all the different ways to go about this and all the different requirements! It hurts my head  I'll probably even think of more questions soon!

You are awesome :star:

Can I just sent a tax transcript from my past year's return and be okay? I mean, my parents are sending theirs and in past years I was either in school or making minimum wage part-time haha. I can definitely get letters from employers.

I'll have to check about expenses. While my parents make a good amount combined, there are 3 of us dependents haha.

Transcript(s) in lieu of a copy of the return (and supporting documents like W-2's) is just fine - little cleaner and neater to send too.

One of your parents can co-sponsor, not both. As such it is better to use a tax return and supporting documentation in a married co-sponsor scenario. That way, it's clear which income belongs to whom. Either parent may co-sponsor, provided their own income is sufficient. A tax transcript muddies the waters by combining the couple's income.

Ah okay thanks, that clears it up. But it's my parents combined income that makes it easier to support 3 dependents. Will that effect it?
