My company is being hit hard by the current economic crisis and there's a very good chance that I'll be out of a job in a month or so. We are currently in the K1 process (our papers were just sent to the Manila embassy) and I'm a bit worried about our I-134 and showing financial support. If I am out of work by the time we have to submit our papers, I project that I'll have about $60K in the bank and be on unemployment receiving the maximum payment per week. Will this be enough or should I look into finding a co-sponsor?

Thanks for your input.

Cash in bank is valued at 3/1 which means $60k would come out to $20k (in support value) - so everything depends on the household size you'd be having to show support for, and how much your unemployment income would be.

Wow, thanks so much for the quick reply.

Our household size would be two, so I guess my savings would cover the $18212 listed in the current guidelines. Unemployment would be about $450 a week or $1800 a month.

This makes me feel better, but I'd still rather have a job.

Thanks again!

Can you quote your source, please? I thought I had read it was 5/1 - but maybe this has changed.

Yes, I was about to ask this, this link i-864 FAQ says 5 to 1.

I would be interested if the I-134 is different, but I haven't found anything hard on it.

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

There is nothing to prevent you from sending her the I-134 as of April 15 or May 1, in advance of any possible layoff. After all, no American in his right mind can really predict the job situation down the road. It's a tough economy and who knows what kinds of employers will be hit next? The bigger problem will occur, of course, when you filed as her sponsor for AOS after you are married.

Thanks for pointing out the FAQ. It says "five times the difference between the sponsor's income and 125 percent of the poverty line for the household size." So, just for an example:

If I made $17000 a year, and the poverty guideline is $18212, the difference would be $1212.

Multiply $1212 by five equals $6060.

So I would need at least $6060 in assets to meet the requirement? Is this correct or am I misunderstanding?
