my wife is from the philippines and we have been married now living in the US since June. I havent yet applied for her social security card. I noticed on the 1040 tax form it asks for this. I dont think I have time to get her one yet unless I file for an extension. Is there a way I can claim her on my taxes without her having a ssn yet?

She would apply for a SSN, not you.

She needs an ITIN or SSN to file a tax return. http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,...87,00.html#what

If she hasn't been in the U.S. 76 days she still has a chance to be assigned an SSN based on her K-1 status and using her I-94. Otherwise, she will need an EAD card or I-551 stamp or card to be assigned an SSN.

If she has been here 76 days apply to IRS for the ITIN so you can file your taxes. Then once she has the EAD card or I-551 she can apply for an SSN. She needs to contact IRS to cancel the ITIN once she is assigned an SSN.
