A quick distraction from my woes  but kind of related.

Has anyone ever shipped a desktop computer and monitor out of the US internationally?

I have an almost brand new computer in the US, literally 3 months old, high spec $2000 pc.

My wife will not use it and does not want really want it. I have to get a new Computer over here in the UK, and I think that, even though it will cost a shed-load, it will still probably be cheaper for me to pay to have my existing PC shipped over than it would to go out and buy a similar spec computer here in England (£$3000 plus!).

Now I know shops like Pak-mail will package and ship it to me, but I was wondering if anyone knows from experience a rough ball park figure and time scale?

I would be prepared to pay up to $500 to have it shipped here, I know it would be heavy (a 19 inch LCD and a big tower)

Do you think it would be possible? Apparently some of these companies are professional packers so can pack it well enough to arrive in one piece.

Any feedback appreciated.

i've mailed one several times, thru the us postal system. cost was about $100 each time. if you go with a professional packer it will be more. one thing to do once it gets there - open the comp up and make sure all the boards are seated. good luck

most compy Powersupplies have a 110/220 switch built in on the back of puter. then its just a 220 adapter plug.

Thanks all.

Hmmm..didnt think of the power supply difference, thought I would be able to get away with just using a British cable on a PC. I know there are differences on Some things, but thought PSU's on PCs were pretty universal.

110 US vs 220 Europe (though Engerland i think is 240). there is a switch on the back of PSU to flip... then the adapter on the plug and you should be golden from there on out.

I brought a mid-tower PC with me to Morocco in a big suitcase padded with lots of clothes. Just had to buy a power cord & flip the switch on the power supply and it worked. The recipient bought a monitor locally.

Just make sure everything inside is secure. You might want to remove PCI cards or hard drive enclosures that might come loose.

Sometimes there is but not always. Laptops are universal (just need plug adapter) but you'd probably want to check out your desk-top before you plug it. Replacement PSU's (should you need one) are relatively cheap and easy to install.
