School attack 'was after drinking binge'

THREE axe and machete-wielding teenagers who rampaged through a suburban high school had spent the previous night on a marathon drinking binge.

Parramatta Children's Court heard yesterday the trio, aged 15 to 17, began consuming cask wine on the afternoon of March 1 in a drinking session that lasted into the night.

The next day, in seven terrifying minutes, they used an axe and a machete to cause $30,000 in damage at Trinity Catholic College, Auburn.

Magistrate Gary Still, describing the attack as an "appalling spree of terror", said he would sentence all three teenagers on March 30. They have pleaded guilty to six charges including malicious damage.

One of the trio, 15, appeared before Mr Still yesterday. His lawyer said he was contrite and had apologised to the school but was unable to explain why he had gone to the college with an axe and become involved in the attack.

"He has no connection with anyone at the school . . . he went along with the others and it all happened so quickly," Mr Still was told.

One of the teenagers threatened to use the axe on anyone who "jumped in his way" during the rampage as students and teachers were arriving for the start of classes on March 2.

Police said they feared someone would be killed when the armed attackers roamed the school playground "wreaking havoc".

A police statement tendered in court revealed the rampage began with the youths damaging a Toyota Corolla in Yillowra St, Auburn.

Forty minutes later they walked into the school through its Park Rd entrance. The 17-year-old was armed with a 60cm-long machete and one of the 15-year-olds with a 40cm-long axe.

Students and staff fled as the trio walked around, swapping weapons before approaching the canteen where they smashed windows, glass shelves and glass doors. Two female workers ran as the youths jumped the counter and smashed more items.

The 17-year-old was also recorded on CCTV cameras damaging a white ute owned by the college.

Mr Still was told the 15-year-old had no criminal history and was not "entrenched in an anti-social millieu" but had issues with alcohol, drugs and anger management.

Imagine if they had used guns?

Yeah machete's can't kill.

Of course people wielding machetes can kill. However, without going into too much detail, in this incident a lot of property was damaged but not one person was hurt, even accidentally. It's not hard to imagine a different outcome had guns been the 'tool' of choice.

What if they had hand grenades and baseball bats....

Grenades would have caused some serious ######!

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .
