Maybe this is the wrong forum, but I just like checking in with my fellow Canadians first :)

So, once I'm finished with my POE, I have to wait for the Green Card in the mail, right?

Does the SSN number come with it? I've heard that you go and apply for it?

Is there any way to work while you are waiting for your Green Card to arrive?

Let me know the gist, or where to look.

Cheers.

Martine

You do not wait for a greencard, you have to adjust your status. There are several steps involved, so you may benefit from reading the guides:

Guide for Applying for SSN

Adjustment of Status Guide

she is coming in on a CR1.. so yes the OP just has to wait for the green card..

Not for a CR-1 you don't (Adjust Status that is).

Local Social Security Admin office is where you would apply for your SSN/Card...

You apply for your social security card at your local office. You might be able to do it by mail, but it is probably a better idea to go there and make sure they process your card for you.

sometimes the SSN comes and sometimes it doesn't... if it does come it won't come with the green card.. it is a separate thing..

if you don't receive it within a few weeks go to your local SSN office... which you can find using this site.. https://secure.ssa.gov/apps6z/FOLO/fo001.jsp

You DON"T have to wait til ur greencard comes in the mail!!! You have ur used visa in ur passport, that is good for one yr, so bring that to ur local SSN office. Usually wait 10 or so business days until your in the system, but u can go earlier. You can download the form off of SSN.gov to speed up the process at the office.

Yes, many of us checked off the box on that 1 form (think it was ds-230) but it rarely ever comes just by doing that, you end up going to the office and re-applying. Once I went to the office and applied,it came in the mail 1 week later.

Yes you can work right now! Your employer may want to see ur SSN #, but explain the situation, and I'm sure it would be fine. I imagine most employers dont even know what a CR-1 visa is! Best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
